Is that the Surrey with the fringe on top?

I am not missing the point at all. If you have the experience you can listen and 9 times out of 10 locate and diagnose the problem. If you don't have the nous the only time you will know something is wrong, with say a wheel bearing, is when the wheel falls off. Simples.
Yeah i see. What's your point?
You can not always just stick your head out the window as you put it . In some cases yes if real bad
Never assume always inspect that is my point .
noise on over run is usually diff pinion bearings ,as crown wheel is driving a little pinion ,wheel bearings a t/boxes etc would normally be worst under load ,wheel bearings when cornering

Usually is a big open ended word I'm not disputing the fact but unless really worn some times having a listen isn't always the best assumption , inspection is.
Without dismantling, you cannot inspect modern wheel bearings. What do you propose, take them apart one at a time until you find the duff one?
Front wheel bearing failure on the Transit is a fairly common problem, when it gets loud enough it's easy to diagnose if it's left or right![]()

How do you inspect a P38 wheel bearing?
You obviously work for a garage, lets take it all to bits on spec, customer is payingIn some cases I'd rather dismantle check than replace on the off chance . Well obviously if it gets that bad then you will know but its better to get to the root of the problem than to late![]()
true but over run is diff pinion ,wheel bearings are worst on cornering as wieght is thrown on one side increasing pressure on those wheel bearings but wont have any effect on pinion bearings , diff carrier bearings would be noisy under load ,i have to get it right fairly quickly no one wants to pay for you to strip diff out ,change t/box ,so you have to start at the most likely ,if you understand how crown wheel and pinion work you can see why over run cause the noise before its buggered enough to be noisy all the time ,you can strip and inspect the wheel bearings but 9 times out of 10 you wouldnt be any wiser and theyd need replacing anyhow then, you can remove front prop or rear to help with diagnosisUsually is a big open ended word I'm not disputing the fact but unless really worn some times having a listen isn't always the best assumption , inspection is.
