Whine/Drone/Vibration type thing. Sort of...ish.

I know, another ridiculous question with a stupid title from me but....bear with me for a second and I'll try and explain.

I have a 4.0 HSE MY2000 with the Thor engine.

- This isn't necessarily a whine or a drone, but something mixed between the two.
- It only happens when the car is idle (i.e. not moving).
- As soon as you move off, it stops.
- You can hear it both inside the car and outside though it's more noticeable outside.
- With the bonnet open, if you touch the alternator you can 'feel' the whine/drone noise. Touching the inlet or something similar at the top and you don't 'feel' it as much.

Today I've noticed that you can also 'feel' is on the handbrake inside the car. Again, only when the car is idle.

I had it along at the garage yesterday to investigate a blowing exhaust and, while it was there, asked my friend about the noise. He reckoned it was coming from the gearbox but not investigation was done i.e. proper listening, listening bars etc.

Along with the documentation and receipts I have for the car, the gearbox was replaced in 2009 with a completely new unit. While it was up on the ramp to check the exhaust, I think I saw the gearbox was looking a bit weepy.

Could this just be that the gearbox requires an oil change or possibly even a top up? If not, can anyone suggest what the noise may be?

I know my description is iffy at best but if I try and take a video/sound recording, it's difficult to make out if you're not aware of what the noise sounds like... if that makes sense?:(:rolleyes:
 
Yeah, any increase in revs or moving off and it drops. Changing from Park in to Neutral stops it too.. briefly, then it slows comes back.
 
Had a similar thing on mine & was convinced it was alternator bearings, had these replaced & still there. I finally tracked it down to the tensioner pulley bearings. Could only hear mine on idle.
 
Could you feel it too though? And, did the sound only go away because the engine become louder or did the noise actually stop?

Don't wanna throw money at it without a semi-decent idea of what the problem is heh.
 
Bearings can be tested off the car, they should not spin freely but slow down quickly. If original then well past changing, maybe change belt also if worn/cracked.
 
Take the belt off and spin everything by hand, listen/feel each wheel


Better check Gear box level too and maybe change ATF

With bonnet open at idle mine whine a little too, everything is fine, changed alternator bearings and idlers not long ago

I guess so, the engine noise drowned it out.
I could feel it very slightly through the steering wheel.
Best to take the belt off & check all pulleys for roughness.
 
So. Essentially, we're driving a RR so that we have enough space and power to carry around the spares we need when you drive an RR? Wicked! :D

What are you doing for storage for the spare bits? Any pics?

All fit in the spare wheel along with a tow rope, jump leads, bulbs and a first aid kit.
 
Mine does the same thing. I have changed the tensioner and pulley, the viscous fan and the engine mounts but it still does it. I too think it is something to do with the gearbox or transfer box as it sounds much louder if you climb under the car and listen near the transfer box end. I haven't investigated further as I am currently in a protracted battle with the engine which has decided that it is not going to work properly unless I rip all the aftermarket junk off it that it has accumulated over the years and replace it with genuine (which is proving fruitful but expensive).

Then you will have to start thinking what is moving in that area when the engine is running. If it is not engine ancillaries, then it is time to think of the drive train. Torque converter, fluid pump or intermediate plate bearing. I take it you did check fluid level as per Rave
