Morning guys,
Right, finally want to get my whining transmission sorted cost its driving me nuts. Now I know I'm a yard because I had my clutch changed and at the same time had a second hand disco lt230 put in. Since then it whines, but was told loads of stuff about layshaft...but fact is it was good before, and now it whines.

Here's the symptoms, speed related whine obviously coming from tunnel, when take foot off throttle get reverse style whine. Clutch makes everything shush though.

I want to spend the weekend eliminating the problem and replacing whatever is buggered!

Just after some advice to get me started if anyone has any

layshaft brgs usually are quitier in 4th gear, noisier as you go up gears ,but since putting 2nd hand t/box i would start there, obviously there can be 2 causes gears or brgs ,front diff can also sound like its coming from t/box and noise on over run is classic symptom, have you had new input gear put in t/box/check output brgs and remove sump on t/box check gears wear and no endfloat

Hey James
No new input gear, took it out last year to check splines, can't remember the condition that well though. Would front different go quiet with the clutch down? Think I might remove front prop and see if that changes anything.

Just maybe you have done what i did many years ago on a 200 disco fitted new input gear back to front the whining was unreal, did 1 mile roadtest back to base and strip out to find out what was wrong?

Morning guys,
Before I go out and get started removing the front prop, if it were the front different or front output bearing that were making the whine, would it go away when the clutch was floored?

Haven't had chance to remove props yet to eliminate things, but I was helping my mate with his p38 the other night and we noticed oil literally dripping from the front output bearing, I don't think there is much play in it, and the oil level doesn't actually go down much despite dripping out, if I remove the filler I still can't get more in without it piddling out. Is this likely to just be a seal or could this be the source of the whining?

Right, sorry to resurrect this, but there is play in the output bearing, of literally rattles up and down if I wiggle it. Now could this cause overrun noise and a whine? And if so is it just a case of changing it, or would it be more sensible to change the box altogether? I just want to know whether to order a new bearing and seals or hunt out a new box.

you can remove speedo housing and then tap shaft through from outside to in remove seal ,circlip the tap brg stc1130 out from inside to out, refit with gasket once built up if had one silicone if didnt

Cheers again James, could there be any other cause for play in the output shaft or is it likely to be the bearing? Just want to make sure I'm not throwing money at a knackered box.

I have the same problem ! playin the front output shaft, no noise put pishes oil out, changed front output bearing flange seal etc and it did'nt make a **** of difference to the play in the output shaft and still fecking leaks

there is some play as is supported flange end with stc1130 ball brg and other end by diff gear but not enough to leak either faulty parts , fitted poorly or flange has very heavy wear where seal contacts it
