Hi, once again Im thinking about getting a landy, keep thinking I should be a bit sensible and buy a little peugeot or something only to be bored with it a month later.
I just cant decide whether to get the 2.3 series 3 or 2.5na 90 or just not worrying about mpg and getting a v8. Did also wonder about having an older landy with a 200tdi in it.
Il be looking at spending between £2000 and £2500. It would be my only vehicle but wouldnt be used everyday but would like to rely on it. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Cheers

I would think that for £2k you'd get a shower of sh*t 90 or 110 but you'd be in decent Series 3 territory.

Take one for a drive first tho (you may well have so apologies if so) cos I was shocked to sh*t when I first drove mine. Good fun but my wife wont even go near it.

I vastly over estimated the braking power of my series the first time I drove it, which was approching a roundabout on the drive home from picking it up. My friend nearly went into the back of me as he didnt think I was stopping. :p

You're in series 3 territory for that money, im guessing you're pretty familliar with a bit of spannering, with a bit of TLC and some proactive maintenance an old series 3 will get you about ok as long as you like going steady!

2k is good series money but take the advice to try one out first, got the shock of my life turning it above 30. Power steering makes you forget. Parts are cheap and theres no computer to worry about:)

ok, thanks for the advice. I'm happy working on cars, recently got rid of my mg midget, had basically everything off that car myself. Decided it wasn't practical for what I want and a month later and already missing the smell of and feel of a classic!

Test driving is the best way to find out what's best for you.

When I was looking at getting a Land Rover, I considered Series 3's and 2's. Test drove both petrol and diesil and settled on a 1971 Series 2a petrol truck cab.

Free road tax. Classic insurance £80 fully comp. Easy to work on and parts are cheap.

I bought mine with no test drive at all... slight spur of the moment, it hadn't been driven really for 3 years, though the guy MOT'd it for me.

The drive home was, errm, entertaining, it provided a lot of amusement for my friend who was following me!

I love it to bits though, it sometimes scares me ****less, but, it's great fun. Used to get 70mph out of the old petrol engine... but... i'm a bit older now and don't have the same care free approach to driving (something to do with landing on my head in my soft top Spitfire)

Cheers for all the advice. Finally bought one, series 3 petrol. Test drove it today, fell in love with it, just had to have it! £1000, good chassis and bulkhead etc cant fault it apart from flakey paintwork. With 11months MOT and no advisories, cant complain. Think I've got myself a right bargain.

Whats the chassis and bulkhead like? You might find that theres corrosion behind the towing drop plate (if its fitted) on the crossmember, its where the worst corrosion was on my chassis. There are also a few other spots that are known to corrode.

Bulkheads got slight corrosion on door pillar/ window frame area, just surface though. All it is needs is some anti-rust and a bit of paint.
Chassis's in good nick, just had 2 new out riggers and new crossmember last year

Seems like it turned out to be a decent one. Just had its first MOT, needed a tiny bit of welding, brake pipes and a few bits and bobs.
