Hi good afternoon I am new on here and hoping for some advice before I purchase my first L322. I have had a few RRC but this is a big step for me. I have around £6000 to spend so I am not setting my sights to high. Which one should I go for, Petrol or diesel ? If petrol should I look for one with LPG ? What should I look for fault wise ? I am looking forward to getting one but want the best for my £6000 as it has taken quite a while to save. Thanks in advance for your thoughts  Mark.....

£6K should just about cover your first 12 moths repairs, gearbox, suspension, VANOS on the petrol, various pumps electronic failures due to water leaks, the list is endless.
For that money, you would be better off with a late P38 diesel leaving you with cash for the much cheaper repairs:)

Yeah..........may, odds on for 6K, its going to need a box and front diff soon. It's just the reality of older Rangies, once they fall out of dealer networks they seem to grow the wheel sizes and the windows get more darker but the servicing is neglected. The neglect is then apparent once another poor sap has it in is custody.

2008 onwards are a bit better, for £6k I would not bother, it will end up a bag of ****. Shame because they are nice trucks, just crap. Don't feel bad Defenders are crap too, just way easier to repair and seem to have mental residual values.

2008 are only better because they have yet to reach the critical age. They still have plenty of problems.

Yep I agree mate, shameful really, otherwise I would have one, but the RRC were crap enough and I got sick of them falling to pieces, looking back though they were not as bad as the L322 by a farmers mile, just the rust and interiors that fell to buts and anything electric was always broken.

Thanks all of you. What would you suggest ? I quite like discovery 3 but would have to put a little more to it. (Another few months of saving !) This is why I like these forums as they pull no punches and there is no monetary gain to be made unlike the garage where I would buy from.

The D3 has it's own problems including the stupid electric handbrake and lots of repairs need the body off. You need to double your budget to leave at least £3K for repairs in the first year.

What if I found one with full service history, 130,000 V8 and it had gearbox and front diff replaced ? Would I still be making a mistake ?

go for it you only live once, they are not as bad as people make out,had my l322 v8 vogue lpg 4 years. usuall

gearbox
intank fuel pump
bottom arms
battery
tyres
