After nearly five years of faithfull service it appears it might be time to part with my 2006 FL2.

At 165,000 miles she still performs and drives well, I really can not fault the old girl, she has been a pleasure to own and drive but she is coming upto 19 years old and although she has passed the last five MOT`s without hardly any expense I think the time has come to replace her with a newer model.

Do I go for another newer version or possibly thinking of a Range Rover Evoque? Would appreciate some help and advice about any known faults with the Evoque that other forumers would like share and what to look out for. I did see one advert for a 2015 Evoque stating it was FWD none 4x4 ( I assume this means Front Wheel Drive with no 4 wheel drive option ). I have not done any research myself yet but would really appreciate other peoples views and opinions.

Hope this appeal for information and help has been posted in the correct section.

Many thanks in anticipation Steve

Hi Nodge,

You kindly helped me a couple of times when I first acquired the FL2, so I glady accept your esteemed advice and thoughts ;).

Unfortunately I am now at the age where I can no longer do what I used to be able to do in respect of crawling underneath cars. I have seriously considered the option of keeping it believe me, but the rear subframe was mentioned a couple of MOT`s ago. I did spend two days underneath the Freelander that year cleaning, brushing and repainting the subframe. It got through last years MOT but I am wondering whether it will this year. Have been quoted over £1000 for the supply ( none original Ebay type ) and fitting of a new rear subframe. If I knew the body and floor where the subfame sits is substantial enough to accept a new subframe ( without wanting patches welding in ) then I might consider keeping her.

Out of curiosity, I did a WBAC search and was gobsmacked by their valuation 😲, not only them but other similar companies too.

Just regretfully thinking the £1000 might be better spent towards a replacement vehicle.

Do your research on the Ingenium 2 litre diesel before buying any small LR product.
Google or youtube, loads of info out there.
Yeah, would have loved to have got a Discovery Sport recently for daily use to compliment the D2 but after all the issues with that engine, knicker elastic timing chains, DPF issues (milage dependant) & ad blue system I went for a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Sport Active petrol. Like the op just getting a bit old/reluctant to crawl under vehicles on my drive nowadays (D2 excluded of course as it's not had anything major go wrong 🤞🙂). Neighbour has just spent 2k on her DS 75k on the clock, on timing chain (sounded like a bag of nails) ,ad blue delete, DPF gutting (& I think a new turbo).
Such a shame as I do like them.

Have a chat with these guys - not too far from you.

You’d certainly be able to take it there and they would have a quick look and advise you if it’s worth doing.
I’ve used them a couple of times - not the cheapest, but excellent knowledge and service. And they have all the parts 😉

Yes, heard of them but had no dealings with them, as you say worth a chat 👍

Sorry to bump this thread back up again but to help me make a decision on replacing the rear subframe, I have two follow up questions :-

1. Has anyone replaced their rear subframe and found the mounting points needed welding ?

2. Do the front subframes also suffer from rust ?

Many thanks

1) Yes, I replaced my rear subframe last autumn with a brand new one. Did it myself, on my drive. Everything else under the car was fine, no welding required. I bought all the suspension arms (with bushes) along with the subframe. The frame and arms was £500 delivered.

2) Not as much.

Me and Nodge did the rear on my FL1, not the same I know, but I managed to get a reasonable second hand one and had it shot blasted and professionally painted. Subframe was £100 from ebay and the blast and paint was £80. That might be an option for you if you can find a solid enough FL2 one second hand

Thanks very much Freddie 17 for your reply ;), its gives me the re-assurance that I should be able to get the subframe replaced. I had already seen a new after market subframe on Ebay complete with control arms for around £440.

I also recall reading somewhere that it is recommened replacing the diff mounting bushes at the same time but these are allegedly difficult to source.

I have contacted the Freelander Specialist you mention in a previous reply, just awaiting a response.

Thankyou very much for your reply and the details you enclose. If only Nodge lived in Norfolk ;)

They won’t be cheap (not silly expensive), but they certainly know their Freelanders, and will 100% be able to sort yours if it’s not something you want to tackle yourself. Sue and Norbert are great guys… and say hello to the dogs!

This is where I got mine from. Looks like they are a bit cheaper at the moment… (they’ve never been the ‘full’ price!)

I appreciate they will probably need to see and inspect the vehicle but have asked for a rough "Ball Park" figure to give me some idea of cost.

Hmm, yes, it just played up for me.
Their landing page is here, or just go to eurosubframes.com
