I'm sure you appreciate that we were all clueless once upon a time :D

There are essentially 4 types of Jack you should consider for your Disco.

  1. 3 Tonne Trolley Jack
  2. Hi Lift
  3. LR Bottle Jack
  4. Air Bag Jack
a 3+ tonne Trolley jack is great for hard standings, it's big but lifts the car effortlessly... great for home, not one for out an about on the trail.

Hi Lift will crack your skull and take some teeth with it if you dont know what you are doing, but can lift, clamp and winch (with the appropriate chains) really needs to be kept inside the car or clean, as grit in the mechanisim can kill it on the trail when you need it. Big and heavy and needs knack/knowledge to use effectivley and safley.

Bottle Jack, the LR bottle jack has a y/u shaped yolk on the top and you can use it under the axles or hockey sticks. genuine LR bottle jack is a good piece of kit lifts the car well but it's small footprint can make it unsuitable for the trial without a big chunk of plywood underneath it.

Air Jack, starts off the size of a dustbin lid, inflates via the exhaust to the size of a dustbin. great in offroad situations and for recovery, lifting a stuck vehicle to stuff branches/rocks/soil/bricks under the spinning wheel. a 4 tonne air bag will lift the whole side of the car up in seconds effortlessly and with it's huge footprint will not sink in mud or sand.

make your first purchase a genuine LR bottle Jack, and then throw a nice big peice of thick plywood in the boot for off road use. that'll serve you for now for tyre changes...

dont be fooled into thinking a 2 tonne cheap chinease jack will do it, just because you are lifting a single corner... it will lift but what an effort!

Ebay or a LR breakers will turn up a Genuine LR Jack.

Look then towards an Air Jack and/or HiLift, a versatile peice of kit usefull for recovery stuations as well as tyre changes.

Bit of an old thread so hopefully someone will pick up on my question?
I have just purchased a 3 ton trolley jack (Sealey).
I've got my Disco (1) up on axle stands and used the axle as the jacking point, bit awkward keeping the jack away from where i wanted the stands, but its up!

Whilst under there I was wondering if I could use the front part of the chassis as a jacking point? Looks like a decent substantial section running between the two bumper brackets. Would be ideal as i could lift from the centre raising the car evenly.

Thanks
