Hi All after the initial excitement of getting a 2004 4 L v8 i have realised the seller did a number on me. I initially thought it was something like a blocked rad or small hole some somewhere but alas its now confirmed as a head gasket. The seller is ignoring me now. Anyway I need to move on, I have a friend who is a good mechanic and has offered to help me out. I want some advice about what I should be replacing as a minimum and after looking on flea bay realised there are quite a few options, metal or composite ? Any heads up with brands I should be looking at or staying away from that matter ? I have read on the forums that new bolts are a must ?
Any help greatly apprieciated

True, but a slipped liner makes a tapping sound as it reaches top or bottom or both ends of the cylinder, I did see a uTube vid once which recorded the sound and theres no mistaking it.

It appeared to be common with V8 engines overheating by running on barbecue gas.

As for your head gasket, whats wrong with getting the genuine part item.

Thanks for the replies all, cant say I know the sound of this engine but after reading up on the slipped liner stuff I don`t think I have any of the tapping / knocking noises going on usually associated with the slipped liner.
As for the replacement gasket I often find decent oem consumables are often as good as original parts are for a bit less money just wondering what peoples experience of them were.
Many thanks to all
