Which engine's the best?

I wonder if you could give me some advice regarding a
defender. I really dont know which engine to get. I like the appeal of
the 300 and 200 tdi's, for there ease to work on (is that right?), but I see the TD5 has alot of tuning options (something that also appeals to me). What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I just wondered which you thought was a better choice?

It will maybe help me narrow down the options, and focus on finding the right defender :)

where did they plug their diganostic equipment into your TD ?

Im a big fan of the TD5, bit more grunt and a nice engine note.

Then again Im not much of a DIY mechanic so if I have problems with my old TD I just take it to my mates garage, where they got all diagnostic equipment etc. so Im not put off by the less DIY friendly mechanics of the TD5.

I think realistically, I wont be doing any DIY stuff on the engine, or gearbox, I know a garage thats cheap enough, but I just doubt they have the computers and equipment needed.
 
Sorry that is a bit confusing isnt it!

What i meant was if I had a TD5 (which i dont) then the electrics etc wouldnt be a problem for me cos i would take it down my mates garage.

As it is I have an old TD, which most people can probably work on fine by themselves, but I cant. So I still take it to my mates garage, and get help! But no diagnostics!

You just haven't yet gone to the trouble of finding out how.

It doesn't happen by magic.
It happens by experience and dirty hands.
There is no other way that ANYONE learned about the basics of doing cars, and especially LandRovers.

It is essential also that you have a list of all the expletives (bad words ....) and that you know the proper time to use them.


If you use an unsuitable or inadequate bad word, like saying "Oh dash it!" when your mate mashes the end of your finger with a 2-pound hammer, the effect isn't nearly the same as saying .........

To give me some credit charles, i do always give everything a go, and am a lot more mechanically minded than most of my mates, who are happy to just pay someone else to fix their problems (im only 19, most teenagers arnt interested in actually FIXING motors.....just writing them off).

However, sometimes I just dont even know where to begin!

Thats why im lucky to be able to take my landy to this garage i keep mentioning, for example when it came to MOT time last may, I bought all the bits i needed inc. a rear x member off paddocks, and took a few days off work then took it down the garage, and did everything i could myself, then let my dads mate phil who runs the garage show me how to do anything else (eg. welding!). Ended up taking 3 days to do everything (it was a long mot failure list) although I was helping with other bits round the garage as well. Final bill? £4450 [EDIT: Meant £450!] odd from paddocks, and £50+VAT from the garage for one hours labour, even though he had spent A LOT longer than that helping me! It also great to be able to work in a warm garage with ramps, all the right tools etc.

So all in all im pretty lucky to have access to that, and im doing my best to learn!
 
Looks to me like you're doing the right thing, labour charges can be extortionate. The feeling of job satisfaction alone is enough to make you want to learn more. Before you know where you are you'll be tackling all the jobs on your own. Just bung your mate a few quid for the use of his premises and equipment, everythings cushty.
 
i really do hope he's not spent that much on a 87 90

but just think how much bling it might have on it now if he really has done
 
Mmmmmm wish my local garage would let me use their gear cos i wants to learn ,i am one of those who carnt be bovvered to read,just show me how and i will know how to do it from then on..Haynes manuel wot a lot of poooo
 
i would have 2 say go 4 the td5 i got a 300tdi for the abilty to work on it but if u get 1 and sort it out from the start you shouldnt need to touch it long as u look after it the td5 is a reliable motor and as u say if u want to tune it up abit u can take a td5 right up to 185bhp thats up there with the v8 well nearly bar the sound :D
