2004 is the one i have . its a blast to drive.. i enjoy it. i did a fair amount of research.. a known fault with them is the cooling pipes which go accross the engine in the V, they are plastic and blow, with regularity. the one i purchased had the mod to change out the plastic pipes to metal. Also they are fairly juicy in terms of consumption. again the one went for had an LPG conversion, the same BRC multipoint system i have on my 2001 4.6 RR so i know it. the spare wheel well uses a space saver so the LPG tank is about half the size of the one on my RR and the boot floor needs raising about an inch or so. the propshaft center bracket bearing mounts go with regularity too. i changed mine out not a tricky job but you have to drop the exhaust on the V8. Also the 4.5 engine has a potential with the Lokasil lining breaking down. the V6 doesnt. but i sweated buckets over the IMS issue on my Boxster so used to it. They are very electronic oriented, so keep that in mind. i did my own work on my Boxster and have owned lots of porsches, so know them well. if it wasnt LPG and with the cooland mod done, i woudnt have bothered
I do love the Cayenne though it *is* an SUV not permenant 4x4, but then again I also have the P38. The wife likes driving the Cayenne, but hates parking it. The P38 has good visibiity, being a 4x4, the Cayenne is not so good. In fact reversing it is a pain.
The other thing with a new baby is that the Cayenne has a low roof line, so with the baby seat in the back, getting baby in and out of the seat does start out sliding baby in horizontally over the seat then rotating. whereas the P38 has big door access. The P38 has become the defacto baby carrier, with pram in the boot baby seat in the rear and the Cayenne the back up to it.
This leads back to my thoughts a few months back if was going to replace the P38 what would i replace it with ? the result is.. its irreplacable
