I have had a RRC 4.0 on lpg before and i really liked it, I am going to be buying a Rangerover P38 soon but which is the better engine, the 4.0 of 4.6 as i know the 4.6 suffers from pourous blocks????????

I will be doing an closed loop lpg conversion on it myself.

i have the p38 4.6 on lpg spot on no probs, travell to london from hull 4 times a month cheap with comfort, best of luck

I think the decision should be based more on the condition of the car/engine than the engine size. I just backed out of what was becoming an increasingly more problematic buy, car was Cat D, and had a few other niggles.

But... the 4.6 is the one I want, so if I don't get then I'll always be thinking I should have!

They both suffer from the porous block, but the 4.6 is supposed to have the better graded casting, if the casting was ok but not quite up to an A grade it was then used for the 4.0, or at least thats what i was told.

The 4.0 also suffers from slipped liner syndrome. The 4.6 has more clout and if you are running on LPG the costs won't be that much higher. Better chance of getting higher spec. with a 4.6 as well.

4.0 is a 3.9 basically. pays your money and takes your chance

... but apparently the extra power makes the early 4.6's labour in some gears under load- more chance of liner slipping!

I've had both & the difference is tiny. I prefer the SE spec- everything I wanted was there but less pointless gizmos to go wrong (electric seats etc).
