Which Disco and what mods ?

Hi Guys I'm buying a disco once I have sold my car.

I will be using it for getting to and from work (some rough tracks) but also for a little offroading fun.

My questions to you guys is...

Which discovery would you say is best and most reliable for offroading (I have been advised to get a 300tdi J-N reg)

and what modifications/kit would you get

I have listed a few that I know of but I am sure you guys know of many more

Steering guard with tow eyes and jack points
Front dif guard
Rear dif guard
Snorkel
Bull Bar
Lift Kit
Alloys & at tyres
Rock Sliders with jack points
High lift jack
Twin batteries
Winch bumper & winch

All your help is appreciated

one that has no rust, has been pampered and has been regularly serviced by someone that knows what they are doing.

list of mods - none of those...

A good service
breather extensions
a mate to go laning with
Jate rings
tow bar
mobile phone with internet access.
 
a good quality recovery strop or two, and some rated shackles should be high on your list.

Have a wish list for sure, but let it evolve as you begin to understand your machine, you will be astonished what a disco will do in standard form with road tyres in the hands of a good driver.

for me it would be tyres, some basic recovery kit and a snorkel first. after i'd done MHM's list.
 
had my disco about 6 weeks now and love it, done egr and de cat mods, and got a few other bits that were missing,like original rubber floor mats and a boot roll blind and sorted the sounds,like above get to know the machine a bit 1st and let it evolve

the idea of a winch/snorkel and stuff is good- but is it really needed for a mainly road machine unless if your only going to do the odd bit of light offroading is what ive been thinking, i love the look of a snorkel and pondering one myself at some point...but if your going to go in water that deep then am i right in saying you also should remove all carpets etc ? and i think i dont want to do that, and probably wont go in water that deep to use a snorkel and water to flood inside the cabin
 
I think yu need to find out more before yu attempt any laning, and NEVER go on your own.

breather extensions extend the transmission breathers to a point above any likely water level and wading plugs stop water getting into mechanical sensitive areas.
I suggest yu do a search on here.
breather kit - £25-50
wading plugs - about £5
labour - a couple of hours to do yourself.

nice one mate il look in to this, wheres best place to buy them from il order them up ? and what do i search for exactly ? "discovery breather kit and wading plugs ?" or breather extenders ?

like you say... ive not been laning yet, wanted to make sure my disco is fully serviced and sorted and ready , and also im used to driving it and cutomed to it before laning, got a couple of nice off road track type places around here i can just have a drive along, so through them occasionaly gets a bit of off road driving in

waiting for the weather to improve,and also my mate to get his range rover classic on the road , then we can have some adventures , although mines a road use disco so dont want to ever do mental off roading where theres major damage risk

at the min im really trying not to get side tracked in to putting a snorkel on, even tho i may never use it, just think they look the buisness :cool::D

I've heard many bad stories about things I have not got........

Think the advice should come from people that have had one and have had the experiance.

I dont have a high lift/farm jack but think one could be of use, if you use it as it should be used. What ever kit you get, learn how to use it, that even includes winches, Waffle boards.

Get to know people in your area, go out with them and get experiance, most of all enjoy your landy.
 
Don't bother wasting your ££££ on all the junk you listed in the first post. All you really need is decent tyres and front/rear recovery points. It would also be a useful mod, to remove the front valence off the bumper. If you have £££ to spend then get some decent mud terrain tyres of a decent size and heavy duty front bumper with recovery points (solves 2 of the issues listed in one). If you have a rear towbar then replacing the ball hitch with a ball/pin is better for rear recoveries.

Who said I don't own one:confused::confused::confused:

Yes they are bloody useful tools but if you don't know exactly how to use one, they can also be bloody dangerous. I carried mine in the series 3 many moons ago but never got myself into a position to need it. As a newbie I bought loads of kit, very little of it was needed as I was not into heavy duty mud-plugging, bog wading or extreme off-roading. There were no forums then so advice was via friends, clubs, magazines etc.

If you are only doing mild greenlaning I would doubt that even breather extensions are needed.

As it happens, I don't own the jack now as I sold it about 5 years ago along with a load of other stuff, but I dont think it's reasonable to assume I didn't own one.
 
I think I will still be getting guards especially steering as my M8 bent his steering 1st time out and don't want the same thing happening to me as I would be bo**oxed for work with no car.

will definately take on board all the advice and get breather kit etc... many thanks to MHM and all you other helpful chappies.

Just need to get my car a erhemm beemer !:behindsofa: serviced and sold then I can get my Disco sorted... :laugh:
