I put mine on the roof rack but although can hear others ok they cannot hear me more than a few yards away. Have fuel can, tyre etc on roof rack also. Understand could be the aluminium and the very hot weather that causes the problem.

You have earthed the aerial ?
 
If the bull bar is bolted to to the chassis it should be fine, I ran a cable from the antenna to the battery, cause earthing points on the roof rack and chassis were terrible. Check the earth with a multi meter...

What exactly do you check using the multi-meter? resistance?
 
You need a very good earth point indeed a nice big flat surface for the best results I.e middle of your roof ideally ( never nice to drill holes) but for best performance large ground plane. Your earth points
Need to be good earth make sure they are as lights and everything requires good earth points. personally I'd run a earth from an good earth point to the roofeack.

You can check resistance but what is very important is that the inner and putter of the coax is not shorted one little strand of outter will render your cb useless. Cannot count the armour of times someone has
Installed a cb and they have a short on the coax
 
Hello Jai, Long Time :)

Set the multi meter to measure 12 volts, put the red on the battery+, and put the black on your prospective earth point. If you have a good earth point, you will get a good strong 12V on the meter.

You have to be careful earthing the whole roof rack, as some of the roofracks are so well powder coated that one section may not actually make contact with another section, this was the case on my patriot.
 
I'm ready to get flamed here, aren't some of the defenders aluminium? That would cause a bad earth no?

i knew a guy years ago that had a cb in his resin rocket, he bolted a 1/4" steel plate inside the roof to fit his aerial in....worked a treat.

how thick is the roof in a 110?
 
I know I'm a bit thick but does a magnetic mount actually stay on a bumper even in severe off tarmac driving say as in Morocco. And thanks J2 but how long is your antenna.

Mine does :)(Morocco twice + local off roading) I used to have a cable tie holding it steady on to my light gaurd just in case. Never lost it yet ;)
