Where should the temp gauge sit on a 200tdi?

General rule of thumb for me, if I can hold the top hose, between thermostat housing and radiator, then all is ok, if I can't hold it, then it's overheating, but everyone has different tolerances  :D

A reliable digital laser temp gun is a good idea, if you know the thermostat temp, then the thermostat housing should be a similar temp, if it is, just look at the temp gauge and that is the running temp, put a small mark on the gauge and if it goes way over that then you might have a blockage or air lock

Hope this helps

Right, I brought it into work this morning and it was top of the white, I got my IR probe on it and im running around 65 degrees on the housing/pipes, this would seem to be correct for a 200TDi running without a stat (checked that at the weekend). Guess its the wrong sender, I will be replacing with a marine spec gauge soon but at least I know now...

Mine is as exactly as the OP's - sitting towards, but not quite at, the top of the white.

Just had it for a 15 minute blast - driving fairly hard. The temp goes up to the 3/4 point and sits there. The top rad hose is hot, but not so hot you can't hold it and the bottom rad hose is warm. The radiator itself doesn't seem to have any heat coming off it at all though - that is just from sticking my hand through the plastic grille to check... does this sound normal for a 15 minute drive?

I bet you have got the same as me and someone has removed the stat thinking it was overheating!! I am running at about 65 degrees without a stat (goes up to 80 if im driving hard) and that makes the cooling system rather cool...

I wonder... just been poking around a bit more after a 20 minute run - the radiator does get hot in the top half, but cools down pretty drastically (i.e. stone cold) towards the bottom.

Think I'll give it a proper flush through at the weekend.

Heat rises :D

200's run cold so the rad doesnt really get a chance to warm up, not without the correct stat anyway...

After replacing my radiator (old one was well shagged) water pump (as cambelt was changed) and some fresh antifreeze the gauge still sits between red and white it's a factory fitted 200tdi is this normal or should I get a new sender ??

My temp gauge is all over the place tends to fluctuate between just under hot and hot heater was crap aswell but I removed the cooling fan last weekend and the heater is a lot better but the gauge is still the same so just wondering if have the wrong sender fitted as the defender 200tdi engine was already fitted before I bought it originally it was a 2.5td and have wondered if the person that installed the engine used the 2.5td sender instead of a defender 200tdi sender, anyway going getting some bits on Monday so I will add a new defender 200tdi sender to the list :)

My 1992 genuine 200tdi Defender sits halfway on the gauge and my heaters are lovely and toastie :D

One of the few things that do work properly on it!

They run at between 85 and 96 deg c on a proper gauge, if fitted with an 88 degc stat

Just a thought, What temperature Thermostat do you have in there. I find when I run mine with a standard 80 degree stat the gauge is about in the middle. When I fitted an 88 degree stat it did sit a little higher. Also I found some of the sender units can be a bit dicky. I went through three Brit part ones in less than three years, all of them registered a different setting on the gauge. In the end I fitted a Bearmach one which now registers about half way. I have removed the Visco fan and fitted a Kenlowe electric fan which hasn't made any difference as to where the gauge sits. About three years ago I removed the fan and had to drive down to the South of France in temperatures reaching 35 degree's C, only on one occasion whilst going up a long slow hill did the gauge move towards the red. I also have two large spot lights blocking part of the air intake to the radiator.

I think I'll try a new sender unit then the hoses don't feel stupidly hot but I just don't wanna risk it cheers folks
