Well had the defender in to a specialist today (doug dransfield @ sheffield) for a check over by someone who knew alot more about them that me!! (which aint hard). What he says is needed :-
• rear prop joint ( knew before it went this was shot)
• poss gearbox output shaf
• rear disc guards
• n/s + o/s rear bump stops (missing)
• o/s for t bump stop (missing)
• small oil leak from transfer box output flange
• 1 x drop and
• advised new rear axle due to spring mounts rotted away and axle very rusted so welding new might not be too clever!!

Plan for tomorrow is to drop the rear prop off and take it to propshaft technology in Rotherham to be sorted! The other bits I.e bump stops I aint too bothered about but question is about the rear axle?? Anyone know a good place or suggestion for getting this sorted?? Anywhere do good replacement axles complete pref close to rotherham/Sheffield area! (axle is on a 1993 90 with discs)

get in touch with sasbob on here he has a few rear axles
as for the Prop, buy a new uj, less than £10 for a good one, and fit it yourself, its and easy job to do

The reason why I'm not doing this myself is I have looked though the history I have for the defender and it has had at LEAST 2 rear u/j's fitted in the past!!!! now I am wondering if one of these times has knackered the shaft itself? If this is the case I know to sort a complete new instead of just another u/j :)

Depends on the mileage between uj's and on the quality of the uj.

If its been getting britpart uj's then it wouldn't surprise me that its getting through them. Quality not quantity. ;)

and if the owner every serviced it, or just took it in once a year etc.
and a "at least 2" isnt that much, theres 2 on the prop and some folk change both at once, they give out quicker if they dont get greased regularly, I do mine about every month after ive been laneing
