What Winch? (Electric)

As per the title - I am looking at getting a winch (and tubular bumper) - Any recommendations ?? :confused:

I have been told Warn are good, but they are too expensive for me!:p

Was looking at the Superwinches EPi9 or EPi9.5...:confused:

What are you guys using? It will be used for offroad recovery of the vehicle it is attached to.....a 90 TD5 medium loaded :D

you will
the first time you need to move it backwards or sideways or if yer battery's flat or if yer sollynoid's fooked (again) etc etc.....
 
problem with a manuel winch is you are out of the vehicle and cannot assist with recovery by driving.my winch has a wander lead i dont use, i have controls on the front wing just above headlight and i have a dash mounted control which means if im attached to the point that you would attach the manuel winch to i can drive aswell as winch,if you manuelly do it you are trying to pull that whole dead weight with no assistance.

I have used Tirfors before and it would be a good addition to carry in the wagon, butfor winching whilst driving i will need a lekky Winch...

Warns are mega pricey!:mad::doh:

Are the Superwinches any good....and which ones are waterproof????:confused:

Superwinches are good. I have been using both leccy and Hyraulic superwinches for 12 years. It takes a lot to burn the leccy ones out but I have managed to kill 2 motors.:eek: Iwanted an epi9 but decided I couldn't justify the additional expense over a cheapy chinese winch. epi9 winches are supposed to be waterproof but I haven't tested one under water. The husky and standard x9's are not waterproof. I have tested em under water:eek:

My chinese winch has the bridged solonoids the same as the epi9. It WASN'T waterproof. Luckily I carry around a 75ft 15ton strop in case of emergencies. You may need to waterproof the allegedly waterproof winch before dunking it.

I've been looking at this deal,
SUPERWINCH LP8500 WINCH WITH DEFENDER WINCH BUMPER on eBay, also, Other Vehicle Parts Accs, Other Vehicle Parts Accs, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 20-May-09 18:34:29 BST)

with what I believe is a top quality winch bumper bundled with a new entry level winch from Superwinch the LP8500 and a complete fitting kit, it's almost as powerful as the ones you listed but much cheaper. I haven't had anyone say they are crap yet but you'd be unlikely to win a winch challenge event with it. Like you I am also after one for self recovery.

Think I am gonna plan for an EPi9.0..... It will be worth the extra expense if its 'waterproof'.... tho I will be out with the instant gasket before i fit of to try and waterproof it further... :)

I am planning a few days at Glen Tarkie The Mad on Mud Club

so it will need to be up to the job of pulling my 90 and my fat ass out of the mud after being through lots of water :) I dont want to be holding other folk up by tirforing my car out either, so overall i think the EPi9.0 will be good...

Unless anyone has any other suggestions ??

Well you might need to marry that one, if she's that gullable :D In my experience they keep a little book and will remind you at the first inconvenient opportunity that it wasn't a good idea etc etc. Like when your 2" lift means you can't park the Defender in the shopping centre car park anymore. On the plus side you'll have to drop her off to shop and go wait for her, perhaps down the pub :D

Sounds good but you may wish to find a ground anchor as there are no trees or many other anchors to pull yourself with. I went with my cousin way back as he lives about a mile down the road
 
Cheers guys,

Once I get the 90 and kit it out I will be over to the Mud Club.... My mate has a variety of 4x4s (101GS, Scammel Pioneer, Alvis Stalward and a 90) and he broke shafts on his first trip to the mubclub, so Im not going till im prepared! :p

Yeah, I have managed to persuade my future (now far future as i have redirected the funds to the 90) wife that the purchase of the 90 was a good idea...she is unsure about the tyres still tho.....may take some sweet talking hahahaha they are not fitted as im still waiting for my Zus from Devon 4x4 - ordered them over 2 weeks ago :(
