I'm off to view a vehicle on Sunday morning - good price, good mileage, zero chassis rot - spoke to the bloke today and have checked its MOT history and it all seems like this could well be the vehicle signalling my return to the green oval family!

Can you just give me some pointers on things to look out for and test on the day though? I don't need an exhaustive list, as I'm not super mechanically minded - just things that the average bloke can easily do.

I don't want to get mesmerised on Sunday and rush into it because it's shiny and the price suits me!

The Ironic thing is the only reason I am mot at home is that I am taking my Father to look at D2's tomorrow as he is thinking of getting one..... And yes I am using the checklist.

Check for rust mainly on rear chassis... Once you have checked check again! Oh and make sure she starts first kick of the engine without glow plugs, yes don't wait for heat light... Td5 in good fettle doesn't really need them
 
Try to let it sit idling for 10 mins or so. If it stalls its prob the injector seals, no biggy.
If the MOT history checked out ok it sounds like its been looked after.
D2 prices are pretty low now so there are bargains to be had.

Remember D2 prices are quite depressed as they are in that gap between quite new, and rare.

They will start fetching a lot higher prices in 10 years or so

That said, there are still some good examples out there and they seem to be commanding relatively high prices, even now. You've just got to keep looking. Condition is now the deciding factor, not so much what bells and whistles are fitted.

True, what some people are asking is amazing.

but there is a lot of rubbish.......LOL.

I went and looked at 3 on Friday. My Father is after a replacement vehicle.

1st one: Fully loaded adventurer, 51 plate, 167K, General condition was it looked OK from a distance, Airbags removed. ( compressor still in place,) ACE still fitted. Roof lining was dropped and the roof showed a lot of dampness. Flexible joint in exhaust was leaking and engine had a clatter. Rear chassis was starting to look a bit rotten on the surface , but still salvageable. Price was £2.5K . I suggested max it was worth to me was 1.7K, dealer refused. Walked away as it would need a fair bit of TLC to get back to reasonable.

2nd One: Not so loaded, 160K 01 plate,but NO sunroof, however the roof lining was still dropped / sagging and it was really damp / wet, would ideally need replacing , and trying to find a spare no sunroof roof lining is difficult. Chassis was also going in the back. Engine did sound better than first. but then car had trim missing and had been neglected. Price was 2.3K, Walked away.

3rd Y reg, 189K, Clean car lots of history, air bags removed on SLS, rear chassis was plated on one side and would need a patch on the other, discs badly worn on front. Engine sounded really sweet, Dealer was flexible on cost at he had it up for 2.4K. Walked away , but will keep in the back of mind as maybe a deal could be done, BUT, price would have to drop a significant amount as in the region of 1.5K to be considered.

But I am sure there are good clean vehicles out there that will come up at the right price, just a matter of keeping an eye out.

Being a basically lazy animal and knowing that my pension was about to mature so I was going to have a bit of spare cash, I went to see my very local independent car dealer and told him exactly what I wanted.
My thinking was that being very local and living in a small(ish) valley community (that's a laugh too, but that's a different story) I could rely on his reputation, as they say, bad news would get half way around the world before the good news has got its boots on.
It took him about six months, and a bit of wandering around the country, he even went up to Derby one day to look at one, but eventually he found the one I've got.
The chassis parts even had some of the paper part number labels on them. So, all-in-all, he did me a good job, but that was almost five years ago and it did cost.
 
I paid over the odds when I got mine.

I did not realise CDL was optional as mine had it.

But it all works and should last me a few more years yet
