Hi guys and gals, I’m in the process of looking for a new car. looking at 2013 l405 Range Rover vogue as don’t want to spend more than £20k. Hopefully less. Now do I go for 3 v6 or 4.4 v8. i Believe 4.4 v8 should be more reliable but cars I’m looking at are due timing chain replacement. Cant seem to find a cost but guess it’s not going to be a cheap job so will have to factor in that price. Any advice or experience would be appreciated. Cheers
 
the cars I’m looking at have round 100k on the clock and it seems to recommend chain at 100 to 120k. Just want to plan in any extra expense I may have. Just had bottom end go on my Evoque so I know how expensive these cars can be. Honestly as much as I love older range rovers especially p38. the l405 has grown on me. Not a fan initially.
 
I have not seen mention of timing chain change intervals, will look.
The 4.4v8 is the best choice IMO. The 405 is called the sdv8 but is essentially the same as the TDV8 in the 322, but the sdv8 was tweaked a bit and gives slightly better performance/mpg. What suffers because of that I don’t know.

So save yourself 5k+ and buy an L322 late 2011/2012. Then you have money to maintain stuff.

The timing chain is going to be far cheaper than a new engine when the crank snaps on the v6.
That said, I agree with everyone that the L322 is the last of the "proper" range rovers and some don't even agree that as it didn't have a separate chassis.

L322 has far more in common with the L405 than it does with any older LR/RR product.

Not knocking the L322, but I don't really see the appeal of them that much. There is nothing wrong with them, but they are a huge step towards being car like with a unibody construction and all independent suspension. The P38 is much closer to the original formula while addressing most of the pitfalls of the original design if you really want to go last of the "proper" RRs.

If you can get a TDV8 I don't understand why you'd want a 3 litre V6? Have you driven either yet?
