What L322 to avoid?

I'd agree Kermit. Although it is at the risk of sounding jealous.

The L405 is really growing on me, I love the back of it, not madly keen on the front still and I do like the inside but there's something about the L322 interior that is more homely(?). The L405 is a very modern looking car where the L322 seems to have aged quite nicely now, doesn't look new and doesn't look old either.

Also, if (and it would be a big IF!) my car was worth £12k and that was my budget, I could have a really spot on L322 or the ropiest L405 at that price point I expect. The L405 would surely end in tears!

All of them sounds like good advice!! I had a Velara as a loan car when my 08 Vogue was hit by a bus. It was truly the most awful car I've driven. There was nothing about it I iked. I couldn't get mey hand between the seats to do up my seat belt, the auto-lane control thingy was a nightmare, it doesn't suit my style of driving. I tend to use lane 1 on motorways exept when overtaking. So pulling across fro lane 1 to lane 3 to get past a Centre Lane Owners Club member meant that as I went diagnally across the road the brake would jam on as it thought i was going to crash into the CLOCy. The touch screen was far too distracting, if I want to play computer games I'll do so at home, not when I'm driving a car. Even a simple thing like adjusting the heater meant my attention was taken of the road while trying to see what as on the screen. I was glad when that went back to the hire company and I got my Vogue back.

How much doe the proper diagnostics box cost, and where from?

Sadly I don't have £17k to get a dealer car, so have to go for something around 36-7k with about 135000 on the clock. i'm off to look at one in Essex tomorrow. It's got the 4.4 engine etc. I've lost fith in the used car dealer I got the present car from.

I don't know if DAB was standard on the 10 reg car I've got at the moment as the radio doesn't work! I don't like the adverts, but the BBC is not my first choice of radio these days.

BTW, my partner's Disco 4 van has been ok, apart from initial steering/tracking problems, turbo change and timing belt done, no other problems yet. That's just on 120,000 miles. It's got the 268bhp engine and is quite whizzy.

It wouldn't, if you'd have used the indicators and had stayed at a 'generally considered' safe distance from the vehicle you were overtaking.

In the tens of thousands of miles I've driven in Velar's, I've never experienced the behaviour you describe.

I quite like them as a runabout TBH

They're EU6 so yes, all diesel engined versions will have SCR ('adBlue') The only problems I've seen have been the pump modules failing due to defective pressure sensors. It'd be nice to bash JLR but seeing as they're made by Continental (as are the systems used by M-B, VWG, Volvo etc.) and the JLR implementations can have the pump module replaced rather than the whole assembly as in most other cases... probably best not to point any fingers at JLR for an EU-mandated emissions control exercise in futility.

Yes I'm not knocking jlr as such, i think pretty much every engine built today is over engineered past the point of reliability with parts designed to fail a week after the warranty period. I don't think EV will be any different just different parts that start to fail

EV's are definitely failure-prone, which is odd in many ways, single source of motive power is not new, inverter-driven motors are definitely not 'new' technology, all the 12V systems are generally existing tech or adapted - the HV systems are all IS, again, not new, but somehow put them all together and they fall over in critical ways very often - not always due to 'accountant-led engineering solutions'. Hybrids, which you'd think would be flaky due to forcing together two incompatible technologies, are generally the most stable vehicles (especially with EU6+ emission regs and their impact upon the MTBF of related systems) and no real development of ICE systems has been done for at least six years due to the the virtue-signalling and lobbying of various vested-interest groups (and not always the ones you'd think!) purely because there's no clear roadmap and all clear heads say it's too much, too quick to mandate and tax away all existing ICE vehicles. Of course, it fits perfectly with the socialist agenda, take away freedom of mobility, then freedom of thought - all via our wallets.

An adventurous day, visit to the dealer in deepest Essex who advertises the 4.4 Vogue with 8 speed box, 137,000 miles on the clock for just under £6k. It's a very tidy car, a bit of a blemish on the back bumper and the high level stop light broken, the gas struts under the bonnet need to be replaced, but it drove well and no rattles/bangs/warning lights. It has a good set of Pirelli Grabber all-weather tyres and proper wheels. If I'd had the cash available at that moment I'd have got it there and then. but I've got to sort the refund on the snotter I got 6 weeks ago, the one with 28 body modules not working etc.

Following on from there, I'd been trying to get some valve guides for a 1952 AEC engine I'm rebuilding for one of my buses. someone in Sudbury thought he had some, so another 45 miles up the road to find him and he had some in stock! Another project that can continue then. It turns out he's had 3 4.4 Vogues, all been very good, he tows a fairly heavy trailer full of old AEC spares to rallies and gets about 30mpg. On "light" motorway runs he gets 40mpg.. He thoroughly recommends the 4.4 Vogue.

He said he was glad he bought an extended warranty insurance as there had been some fuel pump problems and a few minor electrical bits that needed to be done on his present car, the insurance covered all the cost of that.

It's been a rather different weekend...having worried about swapping cars I managed to trip over in the garden whilst feeding the wild birds and fractured 3 ribs! Stiil in hospital at the moment dosed up with Morphine.

I spoke to the seller of my current car, he hasn't fond anything to replace it yet but has offered my money back on Friday. The seller of the 4.4 I sale last Friday still has it in stock at the price of £6k it seems almost too good to be true. I'm off to have another look at that one at the weekend. Can someone remind me how to access the hidden diagnostics screen on the infotainment screen? Was it at the top in the middle?

I've decided to take a punt on the 60 reg 4.4TDV car from Essex. The last few MoTs have clocked up some sort of sticky gunge round the front o/s brake pipe and front tyre wear. But then records that supension bushes were replaced and probably replacement tyres fitted. First place to visit will be the indy garage or a session on the Autologics rig.

It seems the guy who sold me the current car has been playing a waiting game saying he'll send a replacment radio/mirror/etc then delaying to get round the Conusmer Rights Act. He wants to negotiate a refund. All my complaints were made to him within the first 30 days after purchase.

Let battle commence. I thought the refund sounded too easy.

We had another visit to the dealer in Essex, he says the car was taken in p/x from dealer stock. I gave it the best check I could, trying everything in sight, knobs, buttons, switches, up, down, hi ratio, lo ratio, it's even got a new tow ball and twin trailer sockets. Good Pirelli Grabber tyres, all the interior is very good. It drives nicely, tried it on a bit of unmade country lane, no clonks or bangs. Going back on Tuesday to finish the deal.

The guy claims he's a "private seller" but has a website with all his other sales that seems to be full of good quality cars. But as he told me, I have 30 days to sort any problems. Seems like he has good feedback from others.

Here's the link to the site: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/23581173...R683E4&hash=item36e7798ef8:g:Pv4AAOSwbjxnMjOn

He's clearly a trader, 'SOLD WITH NO WARRANTY / GUARANTEE DUE TO AGE PRICE AND MILEAGE' does not invalidate the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if the receipt mentions 'trade sale' or suchlike, strike it out and initial / date it (make sure you've paid first) as agreeing to such wording will be accepting it is not a retail sale and therefore you are not a 'consumer', so losing the act's protections.
I do have to say, chasing the 'bargain basement' cars will only lead you into more problems, you don't seem to learn from experience very well.

I bought one from new in 2002 for about £53k and that cost more in repairs than the purchase cost. My experience with Range Rovers has always been expensive. Thanks very much for the very helpful advice given your time and effort is much appreciated. I hope I can help others in need with my experience of faults and failures with these things.

At my age I don't really want to get another car on finance my pension will only stretch so far. I might just be lucky with this one.

If this one goes pop then it's down to waiting for the 3 buses a day that serve my village Mondays to Fridays.
