Keen.

I've done every service on mine since I bought it eleven years ago. Got it through every MOT and done all repairs except a rear cross member replacement. 22 months in to a chassis up rebuild. Compared to a lot of members on here, I'm still reluctant to call myself an enthusiast.
I'm very keen though. :D
What makes an enthusiast? Possibly an interesting discussion.

Surely I've earned the right to participate in this stranger waving at passing defenders?

Anyway I'd be claiming on the warranty for that chassis lasting only 11 years!
 
How much advice do you give rather than take? Do you only do your own repairs cos you're to tight to take it to a garage or cos you like doing them? Is there any job you wouldn't have a go at?
 
In my case it is the desire to:
-Cast aside all my nice clothes and replace them with overalls.
-Have permanently grimey hands.
-Smell of ep90 instead of Joop
-Spend time lying on the drive (preferrably in tha rain!)
-make cups of tea that last indeffinately because the rain tops it up whilst my cup is sitting on the wing while I lie on the drive
-Speak to the feet of passers by whilst I lie on the drive.
-Become socially inept and only talk to other similarly minded / attired individuals.
-treat every journey as an adventure
-have an endless list of jobs to do.


The list is too long to post here but basically, I enjoy working on my truck. I see it as a hobby and not just a way of getting here and there. That is what makes me an enthusiast!

A bonnet! I don't wear a hat unless it's cold. Not as part of my enthusiasts outfit :D
Defo wave at passing Defenders, I think response varies in different locations.
Sadly, I didn't buy my Landy new. It was already 10 yrs old when I bought it. To be honest some of the body panels were the issue rather than the chassis. Various sections of the tub really. Chassis didn't turn out to be as good as I thought it still was, but intend to change it anyway.

I've never thought about the balance of advice given/taken. I'd like to think I've helped one or two out.
No I'm not too tight, just love doing practical things, especially working on cars etc. Started when I was very young 'helping' my dad work on his Austin 1100.
Jobs I wouldn't have a go at? I need more practice before I'd have another go at welding. I borrowed a welder for the rebuild. Had a go at the door frames and blew more holes in than I welded up! Gave up very quickly.

Tight enough not to want to buy new on finance and buy in cash what I can afford. Not tight when it comes to preventative maintenance.
Since started driving I've desired to be able to fix own vehicle. Started with cinquecento when rebuilt engine in uni halls!

Like the fact of knowing exactly what was done, when, what mileage at, how, and why.

Admire the volvo guy who's done over million miles. Owning a vehicle for life appeals.
 
I think I am an enthusiast. I have owned quite a number of Landrovers over thirty years
Not sure if working on your own vehicle is essential to being an enthusiast? Some are keen on their landies but dont have the time or the facilities to work on them.

Myself, I have done every job on series and Ninety over the years, it is not a problem, been working on machinery since a child. There are many things I wouldnt tackle, though, like FIP or Turbocharger reconditioning. Doubt if I would bother to rebuild an engine nowadays, years ago I used to do it for interest of it.

I actually much prefer driving them to working on them, though. I just do what is needed to ensure continued reliable operation, dont go looking to work on it.

The simple fact you own one makes you an enthusiast.
Thinking about it you dont even need to own one either.
Think of all the train enthusiasts they dont all own one either.

I don't think the amount of advice you give on a forum has anything to do with it. I don't think that's what Marmaduke meant.
I'm probably too hard on myself and probably compare myself too harshly with the very experienced and skilled members on here. Lot's of different opinions I suppose, but I think JM has got it about right.

I think JM is my go to enthusiast whenever I have a snag and Gemsdad too.
I still.dont get why JM is getting a hard time on another thread.
 
Because the world is full of bullies.
Im sure JM isnt squeaky clean either but at least he gives sensible advice (which is what most folk want) and not total twoddle like others do.
Every forum has a lounge/anything goes/pub zone and basically its on your own neck if you post in there, sadly lots of them are very cliquey wanna be in my gang kind of mentality.
