What Jack? for home use?

Heya everyone.

As the title says, what jacks do all you guys and girls use when working on your land rovers at home?

Just recently got a 91 Disco and forgot how high they are underneath especially with the bigger wheels on, I plan to put a suspension lift on it so want to buy a jack that is man enough, and will reach and give me some good lift.

depends what I'm doing; either a hi lift/farm jack jacking up either on the towbar or steering guard jack points and then with axle stands under the chassis rails if I want to lift the body up to get underneath, or a simple 2 tonne trolley jack with a block of wood under the diff/axle and then supported with stands if I need to get the wheels off.
 
I bought one of these after reading a few posts on here and around the net, and I must say I'm very pleased!

I love the fact that when compressed it just fits nicely under the axle, and within a matter of 3 or 4 seconds the wheel is off the floor as there is no body to raise on suspension first.

Also so much more compact than a hoofing trolley jack, but just as capable, and probably better made.

Oh, and they raise to nearly 2ft! :eek:

Two feet! Wow ;) that's impressive. Bottle jacks are good for their money.

Never used one just worry about the stability of them. But suppose its fine if you put it straight on axle stands.

I have the standard LR one under the hood with it, should try it.

if you have a tow bar, simply jack on the drop plate, but you'll need rock sliders or aditional jacking points on a bullbar or steering guard to jack it anywahere else. You can jack it on the bumpers, but you stand a chance of bending the bumpers, so only do it to get yourself out of difficulty. with an adaptor you can also jack it up by the wheels, but wheels have a habit of turning, so I'm not keen on doing this.

hi lifts have many many other uses. I've only got a £30 farm jack, but I wouldn't be without it, despite how it tried to break my wrist last week :rolleyes:
 
i have that black halfords trolly jack....

either get it on offer or find someone with a trade card... Halfords branded stuff with a trade card can make 1 hell of a difference in price
 
I have various things. A small bottle jack which is good for getting the wheels off the ground, the biggest trolley jack I could find on Ebay for around £100 for working on the car, and a Hi Lift, which is more of a toy than anything else. Plus some adjustable axle stands. With the trolley and axle stands it always pays to check how high up they'll go before buying, because the higher up you can get it the easier it is to work.

Here is my current lifting kit minus the LR bottle jack.

Jack is about 400mm height but only get 350mm out if it under load, various axle stands. Can't remember what jack is rated at, no stickers etc but for age reasons I can only assume 1.5t
 
Standard Land Rover jack for lifting the chassis, occasionally I'll use the engine hoist or trolley jack.

Keep thinking about a HiLift jack but adding new jacking points really seems like a fair bit of a ball ache.
