What is the correct oil to refil an oil bath air filter

I have just cleaned out the sludge and remaining oil from the metal gauze Air filter and oil bath, but i have been told at Landrover parts centre to refil with EP90 but in Haynes manual it says to use engine oil. Does it matter?

Ok well ive had a break from Landys for about 10 years after owning a series3 2 1/4 Diesel, 3500 V8 range rover, a 110 defender and a 200 TDI disco. Ive just bought a 1983 Series 3 88" which im currently working through the jobs that need doing before the MOT.

If you really want to feck people off, try saying its for sale, and watch the lions approach! As said engine oil, and depending on how bad it is, consider using petrol to wash it out!
I did mine on the one I used to have, all bits of barley and crap in the filter not good !

Wash gauze in petrol or paraffin and dry out before adding clean 20/50 engine oil. Then go and look at the stickies and faqs.
By the way, welcome and well done for not throwing your toys out of the pram. Newbies often get a hard time, it's the only fun some of us get!

When you drain your engine oil , clean the filter (wash) of the air cleaner , and then top up with the old engine oil . Its only acting as a medium to trap the dust , its not acting as a lubricant (in the strictest sense) . You then put your new oil in the engine . Worked for me for years in various series motors.

Old engine oil can be a bit thin and runny - and if you use new it's easier to see how dirty it's got.
