Need to pull the timing case off of my disco 200tdi lump to replace oil seals that have let go. Does anyone know what gaskets I need for the time case to block? I can't seem to find the right ones. If anyone has done it before any advice would be much appreciated. Its a larger job to do!

Just want to confirm - the big bolt holding the crank pulley on is a 30mm on a disco 200tdi? Does anyone know if this has a torque setting and need thread lock? Whats the best way of securing the pulley when trying to tighten it up? Cheers

hi a2dds, after having to do my timing belt twice on my 200 tdi,
the first time I made all my tools...
could have just bought them, but I have time, so,
found a socket that fits, welded that to a fecked 1/2 ratchet.
split a length of scaffold pole long enough to cover the outside of the socket, then welded that on too.......you will find out why !!
upon unbolting the actual bottom pulley by its 4 bolts, used that as a guage to markout a lump of steel chequerplate that goes over the bottom pulley, bolts to it, but long enough to cover the chassis rail....you will find out why !!
obviously, the rad was out !
you need to set the chequerplate so it touches the chassis, put your socket on the nut, and I used a length of scaffold pole and heaved, or,
you can use the starter to swing your socket with short bar (held very tightly on socket bar) WITHOUT the bolted chequerplate being bolted on, and just flick the starter and BANG it will go..
(top tip / chalk a line from crank bolt to front rubber & steel part of pulley)
so you can keep a check on if its undoing..
it does work this way but can chuck off the socket and bar alarmingly..lol

time for tightening needs the chequerplate holding the big pully/balancer tight, locktight in threads, socket on, and tighten to specs (about 230 ft lbs If I can remember)
or in my case, with a grunt and length of scafold pole...your choice..
gaskits needed are suitable for your engine, everyone sells then with oil seal I guess....

just a thought, if your going to take off the front plate, why not do the timing belt too, you get everything you need in a kit then.....

sorry for being long winded, but its the way I explain..

I`m in north essex, and can lend my tools for doing the job to anyone who needs them, but if I dont get them back I`ll do a Niam Leeson...

lol...

just ordered a variable temp thermostat kit to switch an electric fan or two that I have,
so I can do away with a redundent viscous fan on my 200dti discovery.
ebay number 291324807338

seems a good solution for under a £10 free P and p..

Indesit washing machines used them at one time I think.....lol

Lovely stuff. Thanks for that useful tips in there.

I have actually replaced my timing belt once before (with help hence asking for details on the big nut) problem is that I need to pull all of that out. And the sprockets the belt follows. Right off so there are just bare shafts sticking out. Then pull the entire timing case off the front of the block to get at the front out and front inner crank oil seals & cam shaft oil seal.

I think I know how to pull It all apart, I just don't know the names of the gaskets that go between the timing case and the block. Rather then the timing cover bit and tha case that holds the cam belt.

.... If that makes sense. Cheers! Adam.

perfect sense adam....
maybe just phone a reliable landie parts supplier and give your engine number,
they can look it up in there data base - perhaps.

Terrific weekend. Got a whole lotta things to fix now though..........

Been remarkably productive for once! Wired in all my shiny new carling switches nearly all of them work properly. Side light illumination is done and awesome, one thing we couldn't get going properly was the red slit illumination.

Some of the switches like the fog worked perfectly but others like spot lights just wouldnt. Either the slit illuminated when the switch was off or not at all. Tried changing the terminals etc.. ended up with constant on slit! Left it for now for half of em.

Progress! Got most of em to light up on the side lights bar 3. Got to check fuses tomorow may be the issue..

Red 'On' Slit is hit n miss...

Much cutting, sanding and grinding and the dash meant for a pre 02 Fender now almost fits a post 02 :D
