tried to fix the mess of the front steering damper to diff mounting bracket. the nearside has been welded :mad: to the diff, and the offside has had a nut over the bolt to act as a spacer as no damper is fitted.
Got 2 M19x1.0mm x 25mm bolts - only to discover it doesnt seem to fit :(.
what IS the correct thread size?

has to give up and put it all back as it was - not a happy bunny :(.

Might be 3/4 unf?
 
fitted these little led strips onto my light bar and wired them to the sidelights. might make people aware of how big she is if they spot these :D they are seriously bright and actually throw some light onto the bonnet so should be good as markers in this fog

Layed up my series 3 1974 landrover for winter! Axle stands all round and let all tyres down to 10psi covered the canvas hood and locked her in my nice dry warm garage oh! And left enough poison to stop the hoards of mice from chewing my wiring loom! Kind regards. Chris:D
 
I've started laying in stocks for an assault on the steering swivels in a couple of weeks time. Pictured below is an attractive selection of bearings, seals and gaskets which I'm starting to order for the occasion.

The top swivels came in Britpart boxes but I see the bearings are branded Timken which is what I wanted.
I got in a race with a Britpart van the other day on the M54. We overtook one another several times and then when we got to Shrewsbury he turned off down towards Britpart Central at Craven Arms. In the Marches and Mid Wales the Britpart vans are familiar sights, serving a variety of small garages and agricultural repair workshops whose thrifty customers baulk at paying more than 78p for any component.
 
my disco alternator..
well, long story as usual, but it packed up over couple years ago, so I bodged a volvo 740 one on for about 18 months, worked perfectly.
in the meantime my newly purchased one just sat in its box for over a year.
in the summer I swopped them over..was fine..
but now its got cold, my diesel suffers, or appears to suffer from nearly flat batteries but starts.
run a cold start voltage and its way too low only 13.3 at idle, 13.1 at revs...
bah humbug, the alternator is not even dirty but under performs.
will find its make and purchase a new voltage regulator pack I think....

might even swop back the bodged volvo one for BIG volts.. blinking cars...blinking cold weather.....blinking blinking....:)

just been out and gave it a cold start, and it started as normal....
but did give each cell on both batteries a teaspoon of epsom salts, as I was told by a wise man it will help in desulphating (right word ?) the battery cells.
had them both in the landie on charge on and off for a few days to "work" the epsom salts into action..
batteries are holding charge as I checked the voltages after a 24hour standing = 12.3 + volts ???? (may be a bit out on my tired old volt meter though...

So are you and the series now hibernating? ;) soons like a bloody good idea to me!
 
Just having a leisurely crap this morning when there was a knock at the door. A man with a parcel stood on the doorstep. 'It's a 'eavy one mate' he said. 'Put yer monkier on there', he added, handing me his electronic device, so naturally I signed it 'Monica' seeing as that was what he seemed to want. On opening the parcel imagine my delight at finding two limited slip diff centres which I'd only ordered yesterday.

Nearly got everything I need for my axle overhaul scheme now. Shame I can't start 'til the end of next week. All this stuff arriving makes me want to get busy.

Yes, I'm going to have a bit of a campaign on my axles. I shall do my wheel bearings and hub seals, and while the halfshafts are out of the way I shall replace the diff centres. Pinion seals will be replaced, but I'm assuming ring gears and pinions themselves will still be serviceable. I will replace the steering swivel bearings on the front axle as well as all seals. They're not exactly loose, but with the drag link disconnected it's possible to feel a distinct 'notch' in the steering in the straight ahead position. The chrome balls are still pretty clean so I'll be re-using them. Half shafts and CV joints should be re-usable on the front as there are no wear symptoms so far. I shall put up some pictures and do a thread about it.
 
Recovered mates broken down ninty and trailer used his l333 well impressed pulled landy ifor trailer and about three ton on trailer love these landies

Hello All! Just new to this today and only had a Mark 1 Disco for a few months!

Today started getting rumbling noise throughout car when driving and then noticed what I think is transmission fluid (or something like it) on the outside of rear NS wheel looking like it was running from centre of wheel.

Anyone any idea's?

Not 100% about car history but I do believe it has had tansmission issues previously/currently!

Any advice would be very much appreciated!
