been under the disco for about 3 hours and achieved nothing.

Tried to fit air con belt on - too short :(.
Checked rear transmission - all OK, but brake drum can turn through 90 degrees with the gearbox backlash with the box in first gear :eek: :( - feck - is that likely to be output shaft/gear play?
Found clutch only worked on bottom half of pedal - bled system - seem better, but reckon I have a leak somewhere :eek:.

could also be the xfer box, whip it off and have a gander at both, not a bad job
 
replacing input gear isn't bad, remove rear cover plate and it just slides out

mine was very worn

I am going to ask a couple of really dumb Qs now.

does the Gbox need to be drained of oil before removing rear plate?
is it as easy on an R380 as an LT77?
presumably output shaft splines and gear wear equally, so replacing the gear on its own is a bit silly?

No the transfer should be ok to just whip off the rear plate, if you want to remove the rear plate on gearbox thats a different story.

Gearbox needs the rear collar pulled then once you get inside you need to use a windy gun to get the old 32mm nut off in order to start dismantling the gear set


Transfer is easy as though :) don't even need to unbolt it from the box! On mine the transfer was worn out but the gearbox end was fine
 
try tightening the adjuster all the way. back it off 1.5 turns. then adjust cable.


So you mean loosen it right off? I've tightened it to the point of it just biting by its self, then adjusted the cable all the way and it not doing a thing :/

Unless the expander unit is wrong I can't see what's the problem. Craddocks advised me on the part, looks the same as the old one. I don't get it. I'm being a simpleton :D

Finally got it back with a non leaking gearbox :)

Change mates transferbox. Did his clutch master&slave, fitted snorkel and new shocks and springs. Fair to say I've got a few beers lined up.

Sorted out my rear wiring loom on the 90 as had chaffed through.

Made the most of the good weather :rolleyes:

I'm my first message I had already explained that I had done this, so I was just making sure that he was giving me the same instruction and not something I had miss understood.
 
Took it to Richard Hall in Thetford for a new timing belt and radiator. Came away with a new bonnet stay fitted and no squeak in the steering. (He also did the timing belt and radiator)

So, for sale one, slightly used and very rare, solid oak bonnet stay for a defender :)

Change mates transferbox. Did his clutch master&slave, fitted snorkel and new shocks and springs. Fair to say I've got a few beers lined up.

Sorted out my rear wiring loom on the 90 as had chaffed through.

Dan actually did something to the landy today (other than drive it n get it filthy off roading) fitted a newish winch bumper to it!
 
Changed the cyclone breather and oil cap to try and stop leaks. Was very surprised to get two britpart parts that looked to be of very good quality :eek: AND the oil filler cap was made in Germany!! The blue box bandits can't keep this up, they've got a reputation to uphold
