It didn't, and when i turned the engine off and opened up the bonnet a load of smoke came out, stank of burning rubber and the water pump wheel, where the fan belt and alternator belt meet was very hot, main belt was sticky and there were deposits off shaved of rubber attached to it.

Had a look and then put the cowl back in etc, started it up and it was fine, but sounds noisy. Anyone have any ideas what the fook happened, if its just worn belts or something more serious like a water pump seizing up or something? :/ cheers tis a disco 200tdi btw

Yea, sounds like something has seized, could even be the tensioner

I'm on witrh the right side doors, the doors do take a lot of time, especially the hing brackets. Once the doors are in place I can move to the right side door where the wash basin will go.

Waiting for new Proxxon flexi drive and some drum sanders....

Cant wait to see the finished product!

Drove it from Hull to Redcar. in under 2 hrs. via Beverley, Malton Pickering and Whitby. Not bad going considering it's A & B roads and crosses North York Moors on the Main Tourist routes.

Okay I shall do that when i can i suppose, the pulley was very hot on the water pump, and the batter light wasn't on, so the alternator probably wasn't turning suggesting that it is the water pump right?

But i shall take them off and take a look. Can i replace just the pulley, or is it wise to replace the whole pump

the swarf off one belt can sometimes end up on the other to confuddle things. The fact that the waterpump was hot suggest that it is the most likely culprit. Alternators do like to seize though.

But i shall take them off and take a look. Can i replace just the pulley, or is it wise to replace the whole pump

whole pump. it's not that hard a job BUT sometimes the bolts/studs like to sheer.

Unusual for power steering pump bearing to go as it's lubed by PS fluid.

If it got wet and was a bit loose the belt would slip and wear very quickly but as Rats says you need to remove belts and check all pulleys

haha thanks for your help. A real pig of a time to go. When it happend, and after i turned it off and started up again i managed to drive up and steering felt fine then :/

But nought i can do now i suppose, steering pumps arn't cheep

don't suppose a ****part one is a reliable substitute???

Don't go buying anything until you've checked the pulleys.

it's a shame you didn't look at the engine before turning it off as it would've given you the answer.

i wont do don't worry, amount of time ive bought the wrong parts, would have thought ide learnt by now haha.

I was thinking the same thing, unfortunately when it was squealing constantly and smelling of burning crap and i just ran for the ignition :/ Then it didn't do it on the way home, just sounds a bit strange, like a really loud turbo whistle, de pressurizing noise as i come of the throttle. That could be one of me hoses are loose for the turbo where i took them out, but i checked and they seem fine so must be noisy bearing or something.

rubbed down the roof, stripped the old paint off the bonnet & vents, all undersealed now so prepping the body for full repaint

haha, oh dear, hope you're ok!

Today: fitted new anti burst locks on both doors - for the first time in 5 years the passenger door not only locks, but, stays shut without the use of a bungee cord!

Also fitted a shiny new steering wheel

And took down a shed and built a new one
