If it's a 5 door, then remove the luggage cover and remove the screw from the cover bracket. I think the seat belt lower bolt needs removing too. The side panel will then pop off it's retaining pins, if it's given a tug.
I've had to rescue Mrs Grumpy after she has managed to lock herself out of the car with it running before. Not the Freelander though.The mrs managed to leave it running for two hours on the drive after it somehow locked itself!

I have ordered the same kit off flea bay that the RAC used to open it!
