Got some oil and filter this afternoon, so went to give it a service this evening.
Grabbed my socket set, no ratchet! WTF have I done with that! Looked all round the garage, trying to think when I last used it. Eventually remembered, I lent it to my son, its in his Beemer
Oh well, I'll make sure I get it back tomorrow.
So with some time on my hands, thought I'd swap the wing mirrors over from the parts car as the cover's falling to bits on the passenger side and whistles when moving. So off with the inside cover to refamiliarise myself with the fixings - I replaced it a few years back when I was reversing the boat up the drive and took it out on a bush. Anyway - there's 2 posi, phillips, torx type screws. Gets my set of bits, miraculously, the first one I tried fits - there is a god.
So, rather than take current ones off first, thought it best to get the ones off the later parts car to make sure they fit OK. Inside cover off, loosen 2 screws and notice there's another screw further down. Wondering what that is for I forget about what I'm doing and reposition myself to look at this other screw and the posi, phillips, torx goes flying out the adaptor - in what direction I don't know but its landed in the long grass around the car "somewhere". Oh f**k, time for a coffee.

lol, I managed to find a rusty old bit that would undo the screws - and have the benefit of not falling out of the socket so easily.
With this I managed to get the mirrors off, to find they are different - the later mirror has that 3rd bolt which screws into a protrusion from the mirror. I then did a search and found this which tells me there is the 3rd bolts and I need to drill out 2 holes in the door frame for protrusion and screw...

Rather than adapting the door, I'm wondering whether to just cut the protrusion off the mirror and go with the original 2 screws.
No. The mirror will bounce about as you drive along. The later mirror needs all 3 screws, for it to remain solid to the door.

You are a right spoil sport Nodge. Not only have I got to find a 7mm and 13mm metal drill bit, I've got to take them to the metal on my car - not looking forward to that.
Maybe I'll just change the locks and have a gold car with 2 red doors

Just drill a couple of holes and paint the ragged edges. Job done.

Well got the oils and filter change done yesterday evening - only takes a few minutes, but the undertray struggle, as always, was a nightmare. Got 4 bolts in, before bad light stopped play, only another 6 to go
Got up this morning and can hear the rain on the roof - so think I might just take those 4 back out and run without the tray for the weekend trip (about 500 miles planned). Also worried cos there's no passenger wing mirror on at the mo, so big hole in the door that the rain has probably come in through - must get those drill bits out.

Got the remaining bolts back in the undertray today - less one, but that can stay off.
Turned to the wing mirror, offered the new one up and realised the inside plate has a larger diameter than the old one and was fouling the metal work. So concluded this was much a much bigger job than just drilling a couple of holes. So put the old one back on and will turn the radio up on our trip.
Then topped up the coolant. Oh dear, normally the expansion bottle is empty and it just needs filling. Did that this time, and it all drained away. Ooow. So filled it again... and it all drained away again. In all I had to fill the tank from empty to max about 3.5 times
I haven't noticed it filling the passenger footwell, but its obviously leaking. Anyway, got on to giving the car a sweep out of dirt, but mainly dog hair. Did the back, then front passenger side - lifted the rubber mat and underneath its sopping wet. Rubbed the carpet a bit to clear some dirt and carpet basically disintegrated as I rubbed it.
So, all in all, there's no putting it off now, that heater matrix has got to be replaced.

I hate frustrating jobs. I've learnt that once things start going wrong, I might as well put away the tools for the day and go have a nice cup of tea. Once one things goes wrong, everything else starts going wrong!
Heater matrix is a pain. I haven't even looked at the one in a Freelander, but from experience, the whole car interior is built around the matrix - so that is everthing out before even starting. Good luck!
