I drained the IRD & gearbox oils on the project 'Kay' today. I was really worried about the condition of the oil in the IRD as its hopefully going on 'Elle' to resurrect it as 4WD. I was preying it wasn't going to come out grey.... and thankfully it didn't
The drain plug has a reasonable amount of swarf stuck to it and the oil wasn't perfect - so I'm hoping its a while since it was changed and it would indicate all is well inside....
I wanted to keep the oils as the units will be coming off and going back on possibly a couple of times before (if) it goes back on the road - so I read up on how much oil to expect so that I could find suitable containers. Evidently the IRD is about 1L and the gearbox 2L. I had a couple of clean 2L milk bottles, so I thought I'd wing it on the gearbox and see if it all fitted. In the end, there was no more came out of the gearbox than the IRD! So I'm presuming there's a leak somewhere. It all looks pretty clean under the car, but I'll have to have another closer look.
