Well, it's been an uber busy time since last post...finished enamel priming the inner and outer wings...last w/e a long w/e in the Alpes up to 2632m, followed by this, this w/e...

The suspension turrets, springs and dampers were rusted on solid, so where diamonds are a girl's best friend, Alison the Angle Grinder is a man's best friend...so out she came doing what she does best

Followed by a lot of buzzing back to good clean metal...then, two coats of phosphoric acid left to soak overnight...a further buzz back, clean and a good coating of Aquasteel. Once fully dry a good coating of Frosts Extreme Chassis Black into every nook and cranny. Finally, out with the superb Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 cavity wax. This is a very good product that has excellent creep into chassis seams and comes complete with spray lance...

During the week evenings will enamel paint inner and outer wings. You'll notice the bulkhead has some crusty bits and non-original air vents...this is next w/e's fun, cutting out the bad metal and replace with good. Then buzz back bulkhead, clean/degrease and enamel prime...allow a week to fully cure and a really good coat of Nato Gloss Green. Then the real fun begins...new engine in and reassembly of engine bay + repaint bonnet underside + bumper +front differential all ancillaries. Now, where's that pint of beer...:)

Where are you getting the engine from? Or, are you rebuilding yours?

@Hicap phill Well, I've used the Britpat kit parts for the CV and stub axles. Apart from the round split spring clip on the end of the half shafts. The one that slides through the splines in the CV joint and opens up once the splines of the half shaft are fully home. You'll know the one. Anyway, took the original off the first side and started putting Britpart one on. As it opened up to go around the haft shaft it just stayed open! It didn't spring back in to the slot in the end of the shaft :rolleyes: So, I put the original LR one back on. So everything changed apart from those two spring clips. Hopefully, the Britpart seal and small roller bearing inside the stub axle will be ok.

Wow!:D Good for you, that'll be lush

Thanks A1203, as previously mentioned, this was a big move for me as usually rebuild my own engines. I had to think long and hard before going the new engine route. I spoke at length with Frida and then Richard, they were both very very helpful...with super knowledge, advice et al. Richard even called to give breakdown/RCA of what went wrong with the original tdi. I'm hoping that long after the price has been forgotten the engine will be trundling along...though still need a proper turbo rebuild, new radiator and intercooler.

ps having looked at budget, Christmas is cancelled this year...!

I must say Frida and Richard provide first class customer support. I bought all my parts from them when I rebuilt my engine. Presuming you put yours in part ex. What had happened to it?

Yes, part-ex'd engine. Guess it's gone into their spare engine pile ready for a rebuild for a new customer.

Knowing how short of time I am with work +home +the 90 refresh, I bought a brand new 200tdi engine with uprated head from Turner Engineering. It's resting patiently in the garage :)
Surely you'd want a 300TDI for the newer thing without too much electrickery stuff?

ps Dear All, thank you for all the thumbs up et al this evening. LZ has pinged me this message, "At last! Now you can flog yer rusty tat." Only one problem, I don't have any rusty tat as I'll have bloomin' well restored it all!
Seems we now have an automatic message once you've hit the 50 useful post threshold. I've done over 8000 posts, but not had that message yet. I still mustn't have done 50 useful posts yet :D

Sometimes I feel like the new boy at school on LZ when seeing the posts/LR experience the posters have. I'm 53 years old, have rebuilt and tinkered with classic cars all my life + am a mechanical engineer...and this Landy learning curve is great. Every day's a school day!

Note you're north of the Wall. My son and I are planning a West Coast camping trip next summer in the 90, take in Cumbria, up to Fort William...nip up Ben Nevis to take in the views and savour Cheddar Cheese and Marmite sandwiches...take the Harry Potter steam train ride, tour the isles and then over to Loch Ness and Inverness before heading back down South. #1 son is desperate to swim with Nessie and fish the Lochs' dark depths...

I'll be taking the bloody wet suit...and that's just for the midges!

New front HD half shafts and cv’s courtesy of Ashcroft Engineering fitted today. :)

The old ones are disappointingly in good condition so might look at flogging them.

Well, I replaced the breather from the cylinder head to block this morning because the old one was made of cheap rubber that split when you put a jubilee clip near it.
I wouldn't normally post on this thread such as basic job. However, I went to watch some of the lads I play 5 a side with playing an eleven a side game this afternoon and on the way I noticed the oil pressure was a bit higher than normal  How can replacing this
breather pipe.JPG

do that, I thought to myself :confused::confused:
Tonight I've been down to some woods on a farm near by where I'm trapping grey squirrels. I'd parked the Landy with a bit of lock on and I noticed this
panhard rod mount.JPG

Liquid dripping on to the panhard rod mount o_O
Got home and lifted the bonnet to investigate and found this
Expansion tank.JPG

coolant along the seam of the expansion bottle

Well, I've been meaning to take the head off for about a year. Looks like I haven't got a choice now :)
