Just about halfway through a resto on a 1969 lwb safari station wagon and have done a lot of work on the origanal 21/4 diesel but i am worried wether it will have enough power to pull the beast, i have a very good 2.5 na lying about, or would you go for something turboed ?
 
the 2.25 should be ok it wont be fast granted , dont go for the na a td is the best fit or 2,5 petrol, obviously you can fit tdis etc but theres more work to get them in
 
I'd go for 2.5 petrol but they aren't easy to source. I assume your 2.5 is a diesel? Not much difference between it and the 2.25. For me the perfect engine for that type of landy would be a 2.6 petrol 6 cylinder but they are like hens teeth and need the extra bulkhead space to fit. Most easily sourced engine is likely to be a TD.
 
If you've got it stripped down I would go for 200tdi, been done loads of times. 2.5 petrol is a nice engine but will be thirsty. 2.5NA diesel is ok but slow much like a 2 1/4 diesel. Of course there are other options out there, what about a V8? They're not as heavy on petrol as some people say (in an 88 mine is as economical as the 2 1/4 petrol it replaced) and with an lpg conversion....... I think it depends on what you want t use it for???
 
If you want to go with petrol, then IMHO, V8 on LPG = quiet, powerful, and a joy to drive 'specially with an auto on it...

If you want diesel, then 300Tdi - more work to fit, BUT economical and cheap. downside is the noise...

Daily driver in a tratter my choice would be the V8 - if you want something mega different, but a lot more work - you could always look at putting an OM606 in ( Merc straight six diesel - all mechanical and quieter than the LR Tdi's )
 
my mate did a lot of the work at his place ,nicely welded twin pipes ,low big battery box under passenger seat , heres a vid ,started from cold so it does sound even better when hot
i cant keep out of it
 
Yes Sam i agree with you, and as i said in my opening paragraph, i was torn as i have a good one lying about, and only because of origanality i have decided to fit the origanal 21/4 diesel, whoever buys it can then fit what they want

If set up right I dont think the 2.25 diesel is that bad. A lot of the naff ones dont get the cam timing sorted or the timing is out of kilter or something isnt too right

Mine would still be 2.25 diesel if my granddad hadnt put the 2.5 in
