What engine oil for 3.9 V8??

20W 50 is one of the recommended oils for that engine but only in hot climates. The grade recommended for our climate from the handbook is 15W 40 or 15W 50. So take your pick. Halfrauds oil prices are a bloody rip off by the way.

Aah I see. Yeah, I checked the handbook and it only mentioned 20W50 but I'm convinced that'd be too thick for our climate, apart from maybe the middle of summer - where I doubt it'll be used much anyway!

I wouldn't normally get oil from Halfrauds, but prices seemed 'OK' with 25% off - the Castrol for the beemer is usually £40-£45 for 4 litres from them, was £30, and the 5L of Mobil I got for the RR was only £20, so not too bad I thought?

Any recommendations for a good oil filter then?

When you can get Comma 15W 40 mineral oil for as low as £9.00 per five litres from the factors. Halfrauds prices seem a rip off to me.:D:D:D

I agree!! Is a mineral oil better for the V8 than a more modern semi- or fully-synthetic then? And if so, why?

I think mineral oil is fine for your engine. Synthetic oil does not suffer degradation by heat anything like mineral oil does. Synthetic oils are designed to run at high temperatures in high stress engines, with extended service intervals. Bottom line is if YOU want to pay upto £45.00 per five litres of semi or fully synthetic oil by all means do so. But it is NOT needed in your engine. I would say change your oil and filter twice as often as recommended with normal oil and you won't go far wrong. More important to do this if you drive a diesel. Others may have a different view.

Fair enough! Well £20 for 5L or semi-synthetic seems OK to me, so will stick with that - I believe synthetic oils are better than mineral oils, and I don't think £4 a litre for a decent semi-synthetic is too bad? Not when petrol is £1.30 a litre now anyway!!

I'd say it's less important on a diesel - within about 10 miles the oil is black again anyway, and diesel engines tend to be less stressed than petrols, rev lower, etc. I change the oil on my BMW every 6,000 miles, but the diesel Peugeot runaround is just done at every service (approx 12k).

So, lastly can anyone recommend a good oil filter please? mm4x4 have a genuine Land Rover oil filter for £8.35 (ex VAT and delivery) or a non-branded one for £2.25...is the genuine one that much better?

Thanks!

You are so wrong about diesels they need to have more frequent oil changes than petrol engines because they are basically dirty engines. Carbon flakes build up far faster in diesels than in petrol engines. Anyway good luck with your oil change.:):):)

filters- genuine or coopers/fiam/fram. I have had trouble with both ufi and unipart and lets not even mention britpart or the unamed brand of which they are normally the same

Just seen this on the Castrol website, which is useful - type in your vehicle reg and it tells you what oil they recommend for it! http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829 Also works for motorbikes which is cool!

Good news is they recommend a 10W40 for use in temperatures from -20'C to +40'C, which is what I bought (albeit a Mobil oil, but it was cheapest!!). And I'm using the right stuff in the BMW too (which happens to be the top of range Edge, of course!!). :)

When I first got my RRC i researched what oil too. Asked a good few folks about the best oil etc, was told to keep it simple and keep it mineral for the V8.

TBH I just change the oil every six months :)

I've always avoided Magnatec TBH - the big selling point was that it 'stuck' to the components of the engine, keeping them lubricated for start-up rather than everything draining to the sump overnight. But then I remember some oil 'guru' on a forum saying all it did was hold all the crap in the oil that would usually sink to the bottom of the sump against the components instead, creating MORE wear on start-up after a while! So if you change it very regularly it may be OK, but most people change every 12,000 miles and then it's not so great. Not sure how much truth is in that.

Anyway, a semi- or fully-synthetic oil must be better than a mineral oil, as they are designed to be better! I won't be doing many miles anyway, so will change it annually (approx every 3,000 miles I'm guessing) and using a semi-synthetic - in this case, Mobil-1 2000 10W40.

any money in the old wives tail of engine oil being acidic and needing changing every two years even if its hardly done any miles?

10w40 semi synthetic in both my late 3.9Efi RRC's.......and change it regularly (every 3000 miles or 6mths, whichever comes first)...Fortunately with an engine oil /filter change on a RRC I think is one of the easiest cars to work on.
Personally would sooner spend £30 on oil and change it twice as freqently then spending £60 on oil and leaving it in there.

As I said....every 3000 or 6mths....
I would rather do this than rely on leaving any oil in....even after reading all the marketing guff
