Hi guys, new to the forum.

I'm the proud new over of a 1989 Defender 110! I am completely new to the Land Rover world so please bear with me.

It's had a complete overhaul of the chassis and underside prior to me buying it, I have receipts with over 8k of work done in last 3 years alone.
Needs body work and at least one new door but I wanted a bit of a project so this is ideal for me.

I'm having a bit of an issue figuring out what engine mine has got. I've been scouring the web for engine diagrams and from what I can see my engine seems to be a Frankenstein combination of the 2.5td, 200tdi and 300tdi.

I will include photos but I was hoping you guys could help me figure it out.

It's also got a snorkel fitted but after poking around a bit and taking things off I've realised it's not really plumbed in properly, and where the standard air box would be, it's been taken out and replaced with a K&N style cone filter going straight to the turbo.

Any help would be much appreciated!

All I can say is yep it’s a diesel :)

But would also say whoever plumbed that filter in and thought that was good needs a kicking:eek:
That pipe work needs sorting to get it up high:D.

The big boys who know will be along soon, looks same as @Borders to me.

I can agree with that part :D

That's what I thought, as I said before I'm new to Land Rovers so didn't know what I was looking for under the bonnet but definitely knew that air filter wasn't right.

200Tdi from a Discovery. Common and easy conversion. V5 doesn’t care what engine, only displacement. Which is the same as the older diesel.

Did you not think to ask the previous owner what the engine was before buying???

Engine number can be noted on the V5.

Cheers

Thanks for all your quick replies guys. So guess we've established it's a 200tdi.

Based on that, what are the common faults of these engines and would you recommend I do any specific checks to make sure it's all running tickety-boo?

It can. But this isn’t directly linked to a DB to give any other info about the engine.

NO, but I like to see it matches the block, means someone took the time to get it changed on the V5 and the modification was undertaken by someone who hopefully did not cut corners. Also, if the vehicle gets stolen at least you have it written down.

Cheers

Timing belt, when was it last done, if in doubt change it. 200tdi are robust engines, regular oil changes of the correct grade and correct coolant to the right ratio.

Okay thanks for that. Sorry to sound like a complete noob but how do I know the correct grade oil and coolant?

That rubbish air intake needs sorting. Recommend fitting a proper air box with paper element using either a defender one or a disco version, you may need to move other items like screen wash unit to do this. Also duct from wing top to heater fan is missing, as is will draw engine fumes into cab, not good.
