You know I am an upstanding member of society... I have a clean record both with the law and the dvla and I do intend to keep it that way... i'm not in the habit of doing anything illegal... I do understand what I’m thinking is borderline... if it wasn't a landy where every part is replaceable I wouldn't think of it, but a landy is that way... there must be old land rovers out there that have had every major part replaced (chassis, bulkhead, engine, trans, axles bla bla bla...) that’s all I’m thinking of doing, is finding one that’s had its chips and will never ever run again or see the road again... the kind of land rover you have to pick up with a shovel and replace everything to get it back on the road again... (Just got to look at it from another view...)

as I can't see anywhere on the net or the dvla website that says its illegal, in the interests of not breaking the law I will be calling the DVLA as suggested as jo bloggs to see what’s what.. I’ll let you know....

Are you planning to put a tax exempt ID on it? You would be more likely to run into problems if you did that, but if not then you'd be paying road tax and the government would not be losing out so I can't see why they should cause you any grief. It's very handy to have another Land-Rover for spares anyway.

no im not aiming to put a tax exempt ID on it... i can see the moral implecation in that... mine was never tax exempt so why should it become it... i would like some idea of the age (maybe some one has an idea how to find this out from its spec maybe) so i can find an ID of the same age... (if the DVLA indecate im not breaking the law that is...

im not after making money, im not after making it worth more than it is, im not after ripping anyone off... i just want the landrover i built to go on the road...

Fella, there are 100's of tax exempt landy hybrids on the road in the uk....i know....i've had at least 8 my self
My last Tax exempt landy was a home build.
I bought a tax exempt rangerover chassis with all the paper work.
I then fitted a 300 TDI motor to said chassis, then came the body work from a 1992 landy 90...after a bit of cutting and grinding to the chassis to make said body work fit, i ended up with a tax exempt modern looking landrover.
Then came the lift kit and roll cage....she looked the dogs doodah's and was legal.
I've also had a tax exempt lightweight on coils.
If i thought for one minute that i could get away with making my 09 Rangerover sport tax exempt, then i would do it

unmodified chassis / monocoque bodyshell = 5 - Nope
original suspension = 2 - Nope
original axles = 2 - Yes (?)
original transmission = 2 - Yes (?)
original steering ass. = 2 - Yes (?)
original engine = 1 - Nope

2 + 2 + 2 = 6... not 8.

I know there are 100's of landies like this on the roads - and i don't have a problem with it personally, nore am i any kinda law person - but - i just thought i would highlight your claim to it being legal is a tad off

In my eyes the 90 is legal. It's got tax in the window, an MOT certificate and insurance.
It's maintained to a high standard (im a racer, maintenance is in my blood)
I bought a tax exempt RRC that was on a sorn for £300 with a view to putting it on the road, but in the light of day the body work was well passed it's sell-by-date.
So i stripped it right down to a rolling chassis and scraped the body work ect.
Next stop was the sodbury sort out.
I came away with a bulkhead and rear tub for the princeyl sum of £400
The rest is history.
All i've done is replace the body work....old for new.
Replace the springs and shocks....old for new.
Replace the rims and tyre's....old for new.
Informed the DVLA that it was no longer a petrol V-8 and that i had fitted a 300TDI motor.
I have broke no law's.
Even the fella down the road (who happens to be a traffic cop) was amazed at the transformation that was taking place on my driveway.
It might look like a 90 with huge rims,tyres, lift kit and roll cage, but underneath it's still a RRC.
Forget all that points system nonsense because it doesn't count for ****e.
While im on the subject....i know a fella who went out and bought a second hand 1997 defender 90. He it drove into his garage as a 1997, an hour later it came back out on a 1970 reg.
He took the chassis/vinplate numbers ect off his S2 and banged them straight on to the 90.
Now that really is taking the **** But in the last 5 or 6 years he's never had a tug from the police.

We have a copper down our way who, i am told is **** hot on landys, he has had a go at the trller boys and all of them are on q plates now, he also has a go at tax exempt minies, it is easer to get a plate for a landy but dont take the ****, bur the war ive just built a series one and now need a log book, so if someone out there has scraped one in the past then a few quid could pass hands

right , thers that many series scrapped, i dont see the harm in doing it on the quiet, i kno a few people who do it regular, buy two scrappers , strip them to a million bits, build one good one, scrap the rest fer a few extra quid, then yer left with two sets of plates, sooooo, when / if yer drop on another with no id, or just a rolling chassis project , yer ok.
what i dont agree with is sticking these said plates on a 90 or 110 and gerrin tax free motoring, and calling it a coil sprung series etc , thers a few like that too
