Drove and drove. That's now 1800miles on the new tc and box. Opened up the revs a bit used the throttle a bit used sport mode a bit rather then being 100 twinkle toes.
I think iv found my water/damp in the boot that caused my stereo issue loaded up at 510am and it was raining in Scotland believe it or not.
Rear window misted so put the demist on and seen a water mark right in the middle of the rear window. Turns out my 3rd brake light is cracked so i wonder if its that.

Silly question, but does a p38 driver have a footwell light? Can't see any place where one would go, nor any dangling wire! It's it a passenger only thing,?

I believe it depends on year they are not on mine 97 y, so they may have come in on the 98 99 update,
i picked up a couple of door ones to fit then took the panels out to do work on the car and the panels stayed out so never fitted them:(

Mine's a 2000 and has footwell light just behind brake pedal. Take off panel under steering wheel (the large piece with 4 screws) and you can get to it easily

Our 2001 has them and so does the old 96 (autobiography) so guess it was a trim level thing.

still not got to the bottom of the tapping/knocking noise :( narrowed it down to a lifter or rocker I think, but hate 'throwing money' on nothing more than a vague hope. seen other threads where folks have same/similar noises and replaced just about everything to no avail

I would be tempted to pull the rocker shafts off and check all the steel pads on each rocker it's not uncommon for the to wear down or even break off. I had a few bad one on mine so replaced the lot it's a pretty simple thing todo and cured mine

notice you say a symptom was noise hot or cold, mine is only when hot. sometimes it goes away with a blip of the throttle, other times you can hear it at 1500 revs.
I saw a post a while back that said if it was a bad lifter, it would be noisy on startup, where mine is quiet.
'thinking out loud to myself'... it can't be anything other than a single lifter.. reason being, its around 3 taps per second (roughly) and if it was a rocker, it wouldnt go away with a few revs?
720rpm(idle) ÷ 60secs = 12
12 ÷ 4 = 3
is that genius?
think i need to get a cam, 16 lifters and oil pump gasket ordered!!! pretty sure you dont need anything else?

If it has done over 100k miles and the timing chain hasn't been done then worth doing. You'll be amazed at the difference.
difference? i dont know how many miles it has done. it 'sounds' quiet enough from that perspective.
last time i did a p38 timing chain, only britpart seemed to make the bits, made me wonder if a worn oem bit was better than the alternative?
