Wednesday night coming over the bridge👍

Anyone with any experience with fitting Ashcroft 4.12 ratio ring and pinions to p38 diffs?
My brother and i have been busy with this all weekend.

First question: when he ordered the new ring and pinions he just ordered 2 sets without paying attention to having a reverse cut ring and pinion for the front diff. But after some searching it doesn't seem that Ashcroft sells a 4.12 with reverse cut for the p38. So do we just fit the normal cut to the front diff?

Second question: This is the first time we are rebuilding a diff and after a whole afternoon of adjusting shims this is the pattern we got. How does this pattern look?IMG_20250323_194050.jpgIMG_20250323_194045.jpg

Cut my oil pipes and replaced with compression fittings and new rubber pipe. All seems good.

Swapped out the oil and filter. The price of oil at the usual suspects was silly money so 20 litres of Smith & Allan fully synthetic heavy duty truck oil put in. Sounds very smooth.

Damn, that's some mod work you got going on there. Very very few of of us on here do serious mods like your doing and this may be above some of us to answer dude. 🤔

There was a debate about this some time ago with the 2/4pin diff variations. As far as I remember the one needs to be reverse cut to avoid long term wear. Bemble would probably know

Yes, you're not the first to find that. I think the only way to be sure is to pull it and check what you have. There was a big discussion on it ages ago.

I also remember a long (heated) discussion on whether it was safe to swap rear to front. Someone mentioned the teeth wore asymetrically so it might be worth doing it anyway and then someone else said they were designed to only go one way. I just don't know enough about it but I trust James (Martin)'s judgement on the matter.

Yeah thats pretty much the conclusion i came to too. Itll work to run a normal cut ring and pinion in the front but its gonna be abit more noisey and wear faster and be weaker(but the fact thats its only an 8 tooth pinion makes it way stronger than stock). On the plus side though you can reverse under power without breaking your front diff ;)

Dropped my van off too my valeter as I can't be bothered doing it myself so in the range rover again, when hes done with the van they'll be getting swapped about, im unsure if i want to keep the stormer wheels or the oem supercharged wheels but I do want to put a set in to get refubished next month,
Got a gearbox service kit and seals and solonoids and hope for the best,

Strictly speaking it was yesterday but I changed the oil in the final drive units. Rear wasn't bad but the front was a grey emulsion. No sign of oil getting past the seals and the breather is fine yet it looks like water got in. I have done a lot of wading this winter. Looks like that might explain the noisy front diff. Unfortunately it has got quieter with new oil but still whining.
