Big Thanks to @Shippers, @martyuk and @marjon for this thread - followed your guidance and experience and solved the problem - wires from the recently replaced switch pack tangled in the handbrake mechanism causing chafing and a short.

Tssk. I'd give the muppet that did that a good talking to. You just cannot get the staff these days.

Fired it up this morning to go to work, alternator fault message. Drove all right and message didn't reappear when I started it to come home. Just another P38 electrical gremlin I hope.

Check belt is tightish, start her up and see the tensioner isn’t jumping about. Sometimes bearings go on alternator pulley but not too common - if slip belt off and spin it by hand you’ll feel any roughness but if you do that may aswell check idler pulleys same way while you are there.

I got that occasionally and the rev counter doesn't register, switching off and restarting clears the fault message. Did it soon after I bought it,new alternator on warranty, kept the old one and fitted the 14.7 regulator and its been on for years.

It's bad, isn't it. I don't mind paying extra for quality stuff that lasts but everything is just **** and then into land-fill. Does my head in.

Oooo, a holiday. After all those months off you must be ready for a break. :)

My father used to go boat fishing down there. Very successful, apparently.

Take advantage of the chance to get away, it's a good call.
This covid stuff ain't going anywhere for the moment. We picked a camping site with low facilities so we don't have as much contact with public.
