people rant about dole scroungers and benefit cheats. But don't have a problem with tax avoidance. their are 2 ways to look at this.
First if everyone paid the proper amount of tax Vat would be lower we'd pay less fuel duty and less taxes all round. We would therefore have more money to spend on the local economy thus generating more revenue for the Government,
The other is a that tax evasion costs the country a **** of a lot more in lost revenue than benefit fraud does. and yet the government spends 10 times more on preventing benefit fraud and prosecuting fraudsters. Than it does on catching and prosecuting tax cheats.
Don't forget that tax avoidance and tax evasion are two wholly different things.
Tax avoidance is putting your money in an ISA, tax evasion is not declaring income where tax is due.
Tax avoidance is a Govt tool to try and control and steer social aspects, the same as tax itself.
Tax evasion is illegal and the most common case is workers taking cash in hand, by far.
Following that, the next most common type of evasion is deliberate fraud such as carrousel VAT fraud etc.
Tax avoidance is your right and common sense, only an absolute idiot pays more tax than they are asked for, tax evasion is wrong.
One sensible thing Labour did was to close the myriad loop holes that ethically made evasion be classed as avoidance. There are actually very very few loop holes in modern Britain, as such evasion has skewed much more towards the working classes due to the cash in hand nature of many basic businesses.
Only a fool would faff about with offshore accounts etc, and basically, it was only ever fools who did and normally under the guidance of pub accountants.
I'm actually a great believer in everyone paying a flat rate of tax as it makes for a much healthier economy and reduces fraud substantially. Sadly, it's not seen as a vote winner so common sense won't prevail.
