What a difference a re-map makes!

I had my TD5 Disco re-mapped today, and " Oh my god ", what a MASSIVE difference !.

I had read and heard that the TD5 unit responded well to software modification, but had no idea how it would be quite as good.

Of all the diesels I,ve had re-mapped, the TD5 is by far the most impresive.

The " flat spot " low down in the rev range has completely dissapeared, it feels like the accelerator pedal is actually connected to the engine now.

I drive my truck very steady, without giving it loads of right foot, the re-map has enabled me to reach my desired speed by moving through the gears quicker.

However, whilst at a busy " T " junction, I pulled out into a smaller than usual gap, punched the throttle, and the car just took off. I was amazed at how it shifted of the line. And whilst on the way home on a dual carridge way, I wanted to pull into the fast lane, as I was coming up on a lorry, but I could see a car closing my lane change oppertunity down, so, still in fifth, I hit the gas and was gobsmacked how quickly it went from 60 to 70 mph.

Dont get me wrong, I couldnt care less about the numbers, and am not about to start " gunning " it everywhere, but its like someone has got it running on 5 cylinders now as oppose to 3 !

I would say that if anyone was contemplating any mods to thier TD5, ( wheels, headlamps, bull bars, side bars etc ), spend the money on an ECU remap, it will change the driving experience immeasurably !.

Yes, I am pleased with it !.

Hi Del, I have a few questions if you don't mind?

1. What trim was your Disco TD5 in, before the remap ie De-catted, De-EGR'd? Bigger intercooler?

2. Who did the remap and if you don't mind, how much?

3. There is obviously more "go" available, but do you notice any difference in the actual running of the engine ie any smoother? Quieter? etc

4. Have you had an opportunity yet to evaluate fuel consumption?

Hi biglad.

Mines a Oct 2002 52 GS manual. De- EGR, De-cat, full service every 10k/12 months, running 255/70/16 BFG AT,s.

My friend Darrell at Torquing BHP Cambridge, did the work for me, he is somewhat of a master when it comes to code writing and vehicle software modification.

He did,nt charge me for the upgrade, as we are freinds and I,ve sorted a few things out for him. ( I,m a carpenter/builder ).

His usuall charge for this work is £ 425 plus vat. He feels that, although a larger intercooler will improve the engine performance further, he dioes not think that the outlay for this is justified against its benefits.

The engine,s running and sound is absolutly unchanged.( nice turbo sound after the de-cat ).

The smoothness and power seems to have come from nowhwere. I was genuinley amazed at the result. ( having had other diesels re-mapped by him ).

He only loaded the new codes this morning, so its far too early for consumption feedback. He, and I are in no doubt that this upgrade will improve MPG, as it has done on all the other vehicles he has done for me.

But i would quite happily lose a couple of mpg to have the car as it is now !.

Thanks very much for that feedback Del, you are obviously a very happy bunny with your motor now !!!

Cheers

There is more black smoke under load, as you'd expect, but nothing that would upset the public. No idea about fuel consumption yet - with the broken MAF it won't be very good anyway and I'm enjoying the extra oomph rather too much for economy to be worth checking yet. The re-map cost me £225 and he travelled from Cheshire to Hampshire to do it and a couple of others.

If there's loads of Black smoke coming out when under load then surley it's just over fueling the engine and really not making any difference other then doing the same as the pulg in boxes you get for the injector loom.

Has any of these guys taken the car out for a test drive after the remap has been loaded so they can remove any smoke so the car is running at it's best.

Got my 04 TD5 remapped by Gary Wood at TD5 Alive (now Alive tuning) already had the EGR removed, ok it took him about an hour to complete the job including a test drive going full throttle through the gears then half throttle to look and remove any smoke.

If the car strats smoking more after a remap I'd go back and ask for them to sort it. I only get a small puff when you put the car under very load like towing a full trailer up a hill.

Just wanted to add my experience.

I had a Mark (The ChipGods.com - Powered by vBulletin) copy my original TD5 manual ECU mapping and put it on a removable chip (socketed). I also sent him a spare ECU (£100 off eBay) to be cloned (as each ECU is matched to the vehicle). He also supplied two additional remapped chips - one Economy and one Sport - that can plug into the ECU board.

I can swap them in a variety of ways and also have a spare matched ECU should I ever have a problem.

I've only tried Economy so far, but MUCH smoother, flat spot gone, better drivability and I'd say more torque.

Very fast (one-day service via Special Delivery) and reasonable (~£300).

I have some questions about relocating my ECU (to allow for a second battery) but I'll make a new post.

Had my remapping done by gcl tuning (GCL Tuning...Bespoke Economy and Performance ECU Remapping Bury st Edmunds) just done the DE-Cat last weekend the EGR valve had been disabled on the remap and then blocked off (to prevent any engine light).

The Difference from the remap is stupid to say the least its so much better power and the extra torque is just fantastic.

the de cat was a mission and a half (2.4 Ford) ! but got there in the end very good throttle responce now and the turbo seems to come in at 1500 instead of 1800.

Reference what to do in regards to insurance, all I can say is when Mike from Dynachip was doing mine, he showed me a date which equates to when the ECU was originally programmed is embedded in the firmware. this should change if an update is made but sometimes..........;)

Failing to notify your insurers of any modifications that differ from the factory specifications can invalidate your insurance, this even applies to dealer fit options or retro fitting things like the rear seats to a five seater or changing from air to springs, unless the modification is on any list of exemptions your insurers may have. Some companies won't even consider cars with performance enhancements no matter how mild, many others like Adrian Flux are fine and only charge a moderate increase proportionate to the increase in power.

So the choice is yours, don't tell your insurers don't get caught and you'll be fine, the odds are in your favour but get caught and not only they may not pay out, you could face a charge of no insurance and if at fault being sued by the third party, don't forget ignorance is not a defence and insurers will do anything to avoid paying out.
