welsh trip

oooo... wasnt sure on the dates, i thought it may only be open 1 or 2 months /yr like the gap route. but sounds like you know more than me i haven't driven it yet, but its meant to be pretty savage. I did used to ride over that mountain on me bike when i was younger, but i cant really remember the state of the byway.

so where do the lanes end? north wales? where abouts?

I think if you started at sarn and ran up over soar y mynydd, strata etc. end of 1st day would be around rhyader. if you pushed on, you could get further NE toward the Elan Valley and Devils Bridge i would guess... although im not running the trip! opps!

well took the car out this afternoon run a run, its running well but still the temp will rise to just over the half way mark, gonna put a 300 viscous on and see how that goes, the temp is my only concern mechanically, doubt i will get the new clutch done by then but its seems fine at the mo.

Hey Raz sure your rad is not full of silt or just needs replacing

no leaks, no blockages, no corrosion and always cleaned after off road use, i doubt it. bear in mind its running boost, tweaked pump, bored out inlet etc etc

I'm organising a trip to Wales for the 4x4 Response group I belong too. It'll be last weekend in October. I'm hoping to get over the gap and thru Strata Florida. So if anyone is taking a satnav can you track the route and send me the overlay. and it will be greatly appreciated

Hi there guys, im up for a bit of mud too.....i live in Ross-on-wye so all from up north will be going right by...and it would be a right shame not to join in on the fun...

pikey, the Gap is closed in October. its open in Sept and erm, march or maybe april, i cant remember.

rightly it should be closed because it is a byway BUT if you contact the highways or the council they say its open, BUT there is a perm. TRO on it... i think. thats how i see it anyway. Im sure Paul will be along to correct me if im wrong.

I've got the gap as been open from 1st Sept to 31st Oct and 1st to 31st March.

ow, maybe yer right... i mean to drive it in sept. maybe i thought it was closed because im going to Morocco all of oct so paid no attension to oct.

as long s your aware, thats all the gap was my 1st offroad experience in my dads roadgoing/family izuzu about 12years ago thinks thats the reason i bought a landy actually

well... no it was good. my old man shat himself at that bomb hole though hahahaha. i was in one of his work mates 90 pickup. it was them that made him go. 3 landy's and our city slicker Izuzu. didnt get stuck though. and it was hammering down too. I spent the 2nd half of the day in the pick up. was more fun (although far less comfy!)

UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE, Fridays route so far, start Sarn Helen at th Neath end, first section past walters arena, then not straight across as the norm we double back to tackle the tricky less known section through the woods, then rejoin sarn on the mid section and on to the last, small lane to seniebrige, then head for llandovery short cut through halfway forest and into crychan, head south to abergorlech which pending on the state of the last section we may use alterenate ending, few short ones before soarn y myndd, time pending as may head onto strata that night or camp by the lake..

Abergorlech for those who don't know it has a nasty sting in the tail but there are other routes out so i will bring the chainsaw just incase as the norm route out is not for whimps and i will not think any less of anyone for opting to go out another way, It is damaging done it twice now once draging a rangie on its side and once on my own on three wheels, once in no going back but feel free to look. also hoping for night laning on the saturday night so make sure you have lights...

Dirty....just for your info...my RRC has a front elec winch....and I will be bringing along a Tirfor, though only 800kg capacity, but could be useful....would you need me to bring along anything else...eg. ground anchor???

In answer to your question Kris300, rock sliders and a winch will not help you here, over the years this sunken road has washed out more and more on one side or the other, if your lucky enough to stay on your wheels and not on your side against the rock face, you have to put up with severe side slopes pushing you into tyre piercing slate, rocks and trees, and as the lane is only just wide enough for a landy and you are surrounded by rocks faces either side and trees were do you go when it goes wrong, couple this with a regular covering of axle twisters and a steep decents it makes this rather damaging to tyres, panels and windows...
