I see a camshaft, wussat for then hmmmmmm?

Dunno about 5500  pretty sure thats real close to the danger zone on these isn't it?

If its been rebuilt as good as you say it has (20thou rebore... etc) then if its only done 1000 miles since rebuild then varying revs won't hurt it. Worst thing to do while running in/close to it would be to keep at low or constant revs. But obviously be sensible about it(is that possible for a V8 owner?). Don't take it up there all the time, a few times won't hurt though. I think the tappets start to cause valve float once you start going close to 6krpm, but I guess power has dropped off a bit and you're mostly making noise. But what a wonderful noise... :D

I almost shat myself when I thought my V8 was 'running away'. Had it running and blipped the throttle whilst under the engine bay, heard a CLUNK and suddenly goes from tick over allllllll the way to WIDE. OPEN. THROTTLE. Going through my head is "Its a petrol, petrols don't run away.. OH GOD WHAT DO I DO WHAT DO I DO, I KNOW. KILL THE IGNITION!" Mean while the V8 is at full chat, with only the manifolds, down pipes and y-piece, so no middle box, tailpipe or rear box. So not defening, but gives a damn good gurgle when rev'd. Very similar to Mr. Noisys *ahem* penis exhaust. Anyway, so I'm at the front near side wheel crapping myself, run around and remove the -ve cable on the battery. V8 dies of course. Very large brown trouser moment, felt like it was lasting forever. Mostly shocked because I wasn't expecting it. From idle to WOT in a uniform way. It was an amazing noise though!!!

I'm currently looking at stage 3 heads for this

Get some 4.6 heads and port them? I say 4.6 heads as they've already got larger ports. Or do you just want to throw money at some heads that have already been opened up and ported in the correct place. Pay money for someone else who has done it properly?

Camshaft is a 454 high torque cam :p I also still have the ported heads which I may clean up and paint before selling

You numpty :D shoulda just pulled the king lead!

And yeah was thinking 4.6 heads and they'd probably be overkill anyway given that the engine in this is already far over the top! The brakes are under rated and the steering is vague so may as well make it a full suicide car

Idea was theres a set on ebay atm and if they go cheap it'll be worth a shot.....then again I may just leave it as it is and not upgrade the engine any further. Guess the main difference is the valve size then if the 4.6 heads are already ported ?

Ah, might as well throw it away then... :p

I've been bitten by old broken down HT leads before, doesn't feel great. I tend to avoid going near high voltage things anyway, once you've had a few nips you learn!

Yeah, you probably don't want to build a 3.5 up too much if its in a series, say goodbye to gearbox, halfshafts... or you know yourself if you turn it into a full suicide car as you say!

Getting the RV8 to breath easier wouldn't hurt, to go with your edelbrock and fancy exhaust anyway. But where do you stop? Merlin heads, Buick 300 heads from 1964...? Your wallet is the limit! :p

Valve size on Rover V8s haven't changed since the SD1 heads, which was 1976 (I think...). Unless you get bigger ones fitted!

The cam shaft is a used one I got free with the engine, had about 2k on it I think. No use for it and no one wants to buy it so it may find its way into a lamp or scrap dragon later this year!

All my HT leads are brand new Bosch ones ;) either that or pull the coil connection as that doesn't bite!

Thats the thing I'm toying with......I can build it up and have it being an awesome little engine that I don't need to rev at all to get power out of. I suppose though I could fit the lower spec stage 2 heads and that'd let the engine breathe nicely, give me a bit of extra power but without upgrading the cam and springs I wont be creating anything major.

Wallet wise I'd probably stop there, it'd be a fresh short block with a nice set of heads on it, an awesome inlet system and get good power without trying. Plus it'd probably sound a bit nicer and be a bit more economical if its freer flowing

That being said it goes well as it is.......so its a toss up of should I do it because I need to or just because V8 ?

Lamp sounds good. ;)

All my HT leads are brand new now... As is rotor arm, distributor cap. All genuine! Only the best for the best(well not quite...) RRC.

I think from what you've said already, and the fact that it out does your Golf and seems reasonable enough. I reckon the reasoning would be just because V8.

You could leave the engine alone and bolt other bits on first, see how it goes for a while then tinker with it later when you've had some use out of it.

My rotor arm probably wants replacing as I think the guy used the old one. Its a Lucas one though as is the cap, got a power spark cap here but no new arm!

It does outdo the golf but thats due to the incredibly short gearing :p 0-50/60 it'll have it but anything after that the golf will blitz it

That being said I've made my mind up on the heads.....they end tomorrow morning so if I'm up in time I'll bid on them if not then I wont! Simple as that :) don't need them so no loss and should I win them its a nice bonus

Ahhh I see. I had the exact ones you mention on my watch list. Went for quite a price!

Any gain is a gain. 1mm larger valve is quite a considerable area when you work out how much extra room there is for that extra air to get through! I certainly wouldn't turn down 1mm bigger valves. Of course bigger is better so if I were to get large valves I'd attempt to get the biggest I could lay my greasy hands on and my wallet could handle.

Back with you? Where did it go?

I have a set of disc brake conversion axles but there's no point. Widens the track width so it'd cock up my arches

No reason to tbh. Stops well enough just not as fast as a normal car would :p

Are the brakes still the single cylinder ones? They're pretty simple to sort out, even I managed it :D

Hopefully this thread'll get a clean up, its a good one :)
