so that leaves not a lot. if it was the battery getting wet that caused it it would have showed itself when the battery got wet not 1 1/2 hours later.
so as far as i can tell ,from here, its either the alt or the fuel cut off solenoid.
i suspect the alt is soggy and not charging which would explain what you describe..
i prescribe you borrow a hairdryer from one of the freelander 'boys?' and try and dry it wit that. of course you would need to check that indeedy there was no output from the alt first.
i'll assume that it have a fuel cutoff solenoid rather than a stop cable so you might want to look at that aswell.
