I am surprised, that as an old-timer, you arent aware of this, or the fixes . Havent you searched?

Dont need to do that, Dipps. Just need to sit on the keys .the other way you can get water in the boot is to reconnect the battery, forget that this makes the window go down and then park it outside in the *issing rain for a week ....

Many people do not realise they can operate their Freelander 1 tailgate window with the remote key fob. Press and hold the open button on the key fob and the tailgate window will come down. You can put it back up either using the button on the dashboard, or by inserting the key in the tailgate door handle and turning it clockwise until the window is fully up. Please note this is the only operation for the key in the tailgate door, this key DOES NOT open the door!Ooo blip blip ...
but do it properly - dont just drill it - theres a knack to forming it, tha knowsdrill a 6mm hole either end.
Drill a 6mm hole (quarter inch in old money) either end. Not everyone's answer though but it solved my problem
