I own a 2008 Defender 110, if i get her serviced by my regular mechanic, will this affect my warranty?

yup - do everything the manufacturer recomends at the right time with the right parts..... but he has to be a "propper" garage/mechanic - not yo next door neighbour ;).

i would like to see how it stands up if he has a problem that needs to be rectified under warranty.main stealers will try to get out of paying for summit under warranty if its all stamped up by a main stealer.

you also gotta consider whats gonna be more attractive to a potential buyer in the future a book stamped up by landrover,or a book written in or stamped by mr r sole the mechanic who works in his shed? not saying your guy works in shed of course

As above - as long as servicing schedule followed to the letter and done by a "proper" garage with genuine approved parts then you're fine.

I was lucky enough to own a Lotus a couple of years back and the main dealer charged a fortune (Over 150 an hour from memory) and were absolutely shocking! These guys serviced Lotus, Porsche, Ferrari, and Maserati and were worse than a Kwik Fit trainee :(

In the end almost everyone I knew used a local Lotus independant who was half the price and actually gave a monkeys about your pride and joy. Always did a great job and even owners of brand new Loti took them there. One of them refused to let his new car into the dealers workshop without being present and even then only for warranty work which they had to carry out for free :D

Why does he have to be VAT registered - i never heard of VAT registration being used as a qualification or requirement to service cars ffs!!!

It's to do with the fact that if it is a VAT registered garage then it is a properly setup garage - it's a requsition for quite a few things in the motor trade, some trade parts places I know will not sell to you unless your VAT registered - they don't care if it's not even remotly garage related they just want to see proof you are a business of sorts.

I guess I could get a piece of paper print on it a nice letter head on a colour printer, put together an invoice and call myself a garage, if I have been registered then it proves at the very least I have setup (at least on paper) as a business.
