warning lights and things not working

Hi I have a 1999 p38 diesel, I've got abs light, traction control, SRS airbag lights up, plus no heater working at all and no EAS lights on, this has happened a few times now but soon goes off, I have replaced alternator with a refurbished BMW one seemed to work for a bit happened again, replaced EAS timer relay worked for a bit again, then it started to say alternator fault replaced regulator and bush's on my old alternator refitted and I've got 13.8 volts I know it should be 14.2 but that's better than it was, this morning hard to start car air bubbles in clear fuel line once start bubbles go as if pump not working, new battery on order as only 11.7 volts at battery, could it be a bad earth or fuse box any help would be grateful Andy.

Change the battery and see what you get. You fitted the wrong controller to the alternator. Fuse box could be a contender.

Hi Wammers thanks for your help I fitted a VERG1060 12 VOLT 12V NEW VALEO ALTERNATOR REGULATOR as a saw it on here somewhere which one should I fit, new battery on order from Mega Batteries might com today or Monday and I have a spare fuse box are they just a matter of unplug one and replace, thanks again Andy

Regulator should be 14.2 or more.
Fuse box or bad earths are also possibles, but a duff alternator and low battery voltage will play havoc.

Hi Datatek thanks but still can't find a regulator that say's 14.2 volts output any advice as where to get one from I tried vehicle electrics last time do I have to order it special or can I get one off the shelve Thanks Andy

I don't know in the UK but several have found them, it's a matter of searching. Ebay may be your friend.
14.5 to 14.8 would also be OK

That is the one i posted and which i fitted to my P38 gives 14.2 unless you were sent the wrong unit. If it's the big sealed calcium one you will need more than 13.8 to charge it properly. 14.2 on calcium is marginal better with minimum 14.4. Make sure battery is disconnected when you play with fuse box.

If it's a valeo alternator then give these people a ring on 01217060688. They were very helpful, the part has to come from the Netherlands and is priced at £26 odd+vat+ £3 postage. Make sure the fuse box is identical to the one you are taking off ie. year/fuel /engine type otherwise you will have more problems.

Think the man said the set point for the diesel was 14.7, I may be wrong , it was last week I spoke to him.

Not unless it has a calcium battery fitted. That would boil a lead acid up in no time. Never seen one with more than 14.2. Keith has found some at 13.8. Mine read 13.9 at 2000 RPM all on, but put that down to knackered slip rings and worn brushes. Trued the slip rings in the lathe and fitted the VERG1060 cleaned all connections up and it went to 14.2. 14.5-14.7 would be ok with a big calcium battery though.

Maybe so but lots of different battery designs and specs have emerged over the last 20 or so years. So you have to be careful what you fit. You can choose a battery to suit your standard charging system or change the charging system to suit the newer batteries. To many variations to go through, but generally. Lead acid 13.5 to 13.8. Lead acid low antimony 13.8 to 14.2 because low antimony reduced gassing usually sealed low maintenance units. Hybrid lead acid calcium, were one plate was antimony one plate was calcium reduced gassing further. Through to gel batteries were gassing is fatal so charge rate is critical. Then full calcium were charging rate needs to be higher than 14.4 for proper charging.

The first aftemarket Lead Calcium batteries came from Delco Remy, Their data sheets say 14 to 15 volts for charging. 14.2 is fine, 14.5 is better, 14.8/15 OK if the vehicle is used for frequent short runs IMO.

Thanks for your help so far doe's anyone know if all the faulty circuit's share a common earth as I seems that all the safety like like assisted braking, abs, traction control and airbags are affected, plus no heater

Hi again looked in rave and all fault's seem to plug into the BECM under driver's seat the driver's seatbelt was wet that same morning but only where it rolls up inside door post could they be connected Andy.
