I am new to this forum lark so if this is old then sorry. I purchased a viscous Unit for my 1995 2.5 diesel P38 two months ago from Island 4X4. Coming home the other Saturday and a loud bang from the front and some bits going in the other direction saw me in a lay-by. Much to my shock the bonnet looks like an alien has tried to escape, the radiator cowling is all over the road and so is my new fan. It appears the fan just went to pieces and left the metal bits all alone at the front of the engine.

As a result has anyone had the same or similar happen? and just as a side how do you change the belts as mine are partly shredded and I can't see how to release the tension.

where abouts are you mate.

Strange one for the VU to disintigrate. Are there any blades missing from the fan or anything else that may have thrown the unit out of balance?? Could have been a fault in the casting or manufacture, or the belt going may have done the damage which is a "Chicken or Egg" situation. I would give Sam a call at Island and explain what's happened.

The unit was in one piece at the start of the trip, did the normal POWER (petrol, oil, water, electrics, rubber)thing before the off. I have spoken to Island 4x4 and they want the remains back for the manufacturer to look over. I just want my car back on the road straight and in one piece. Sometimes you gotta accept that the law of averages states that a bad one will get thropugh eventually.

thats a very understanding attitude, i would be livid, but then, what can you do, best way is try to get some fix from the manufacturers!:welcome2:

It was a pattern part at a cost of £65 instead of £114 + VAT, it is a chance you take, but only once. Things could be worse, this wont kill me or hang around forever, its a case of suck it up, fix the motor and try to get somthing back from the manufacturer. One thing I will say though is that the Gov Consumer Direct people are very good at telling you how to deal with this sort of thing. I am following their advice and Island 4x4 are responsive to my letters. The remains of the unit are on their way back to them.

good man, keep at them and keep us all informed as to your progress.:D;)

Irregardless of whether it was a spurious part or not, it should be fit for the purpose intended. I, and many others have bought and used spurious parts from replacement bulbs, batteries, exhausts, alternators to water pumps etc. I cannot afford to trek down to the main stealer and get ripped off unless it's a known fact that original is best. Let's face it, all the lpg kits, Arnotts air springs are also spurious and I don't read many complaints about them.

LR Standards??........that sums up everything John!!! Lockouts, slipped liners etc. are brilliant examples of LR quality standards!!!!:hysterically_laughi

Probably been ten times more reliable if they had used spurious parts to start with!!
