VIN Code query

Hi, just purchased a 90 Td5 and have checked the VIN closely - I was expecting to see a value of '8' in the eigth digit to signify engine type 'Td5'.

However the value in that field is '5' - and all of the VIN decoders the engine values seem to go 1,2,3,6,8,9 - no mention of 5 and what 5 means.

Tried Clifton.nl and it did give a value but I am suspicious on this particular issue.

Any thoughts anyone?

Its probably stolen. If i was you i'd take it down a lane and burn it then report it as stolen. Again.

Don't think it was - the VIN plate behind the windscreen and the Vin plate inthe engine bay both match and the rest of the code matches the vehicle - a 2002 RHD 5 speed Defender 90.

Besides it came from a reputable dealer 2 weeks ago and all the V5 stuff matches up.

I wonder if it started life as something other than a Td5 - ie an engine change .....

Might be worth asking a main dealer to check on their database?

If made in africa could be a 300 or was it made for export and came back or MOD w/300
