Vibration at approx 1750 rpm?

We think we may have found the cause of my vibration. The lower engine mount at the back of the engine has about 10mm play when pulling the engine about by hand. Also the mount by the battery has slight play in it too. New ones will be ordered on tuesday (where's the best place to order these from?) and fitted next weekend and hopefully that will be the end of it. I can then expect many thousands of miles of trouble free motoring!:)

Well done that man....... told you it would be the mounts.

I dunno why LR placed such cheap parts on the FL.

My theory is that the engine mounts on the diesel and petrol models are leading to the transmission problems of the VCU,prop bearings and differentials.

When I had the prop off (2 wheel drive) you could notice the engine movements more. My point is...... the prop is buffering the engine movements and vibrations and this has to take its toll. I have started to make new types of mounts for the FL will keep you updated

Oh and ehh...... Happy new year ;)

L Series engine mount? Go to the dealer - they are under £40 and now have a damping block welded to them..5 min job to replace. Just make sure you put it on the right way up !!! If the noise still continues check the resonator living under the N/S wing - they have a habit of rattling on the inside of the wing.

Good point. I removed my prop assembly to elimintae that side of things from being the cause. But I think the vibration has got worse since then? Please do keep us updated on the imporved engine mounts. Sounds very interesting

RE: Dealers for parts; I've emailed Stratstones for a price as i could probably get there and back in a lunch hour. If they are comparably priced to places like Paddocks then i'll get them from them. Mail order is normally just more conveniant for me.:)

yep nice one tiapan, not only do yer sort fings out but give er good rundown fer others, , , ,best oh luck. . . .:) :) :) :)

Ta mate. I cant wait to ge the new mounts so I can confirm that was the fault and not a gearbox/IRD/Driveshafts (pair) that was needed!;)

No worries, good you are making progress Taipan

Its only the new bushes for the mounts I am trying to fabricate, the original ones are naff.

Its not rocket science but I will construct a few more prototypes and see if I can get good engine support combined with a silent transmission.

Personally I dont know why Lotus didnt engineer a better support for the k-series engine, after all they do spend vast sums on R&D. They seemed to have taken the lazy way out and just used the bracket/bushes from Rover

No had missed that, cheers, was there an improvment for the k-series engine mount as well?

Have you capsized the kayak?

I'll snap photo of the mount for you I get it. Hopefully it will show the modifcation. Well unless they palm me off with the old type. :D

Hello Tipan
I am new to this site but I had a problem like this it was a tinny rattle, it turn out to be a tin dust/dirt cover that covered the part of the ird where the propshaft when in ,this was loose and vibrated at 1700-2000 rpm I just put some sealant around it and the rattle when .just a thought

Wel the replacment mount was identical so I didn't bother taking any pictures. Not sure what mount has been modified but this was the lower tie rod.

Hi MarkII

Thanks mate any suggestions are welcomed. I'll check that out on sunday when I'm back under the car again!

Useful point MARK II, this hadnt been mentioned before but usually overlooked. Easiest way is to remove it and drive around to see if noise has gone.

They are flimsy and far from robust. I have strengthed the splash guard with some aluminium strapping running from front to back (on the engine bay side) Takes a bit of the play out of the guard.

But with the vibration at 1750rpm ties in with peak torque for the diesel engine.

We are talking about the tie bar that is found under the N/S/F aren't we? Big chonking rubber mount at one end and a smaller one at the other? Steadies the engine? L Series?

Yes its an L series. The one I replaced was number 18 in the diiagram below. It sits behind teh engine on the driver side.

The one I suspect it still faulty is number 14. It looks like a pig of a job. I dont want to buy it untill i know its definetely knackered knackerad as its about £115. LR1796 had a great idea f packing the mount out to see if alters or stops the vibration and confirm its knackered!

I'm going to go out in a minute and try and get a better look at it using mirrors and torches etc. See if I can see if it split or something?

Am I the only one that cant see a diagram or numbers?!

Its a parts diagram image? I can see it.

Well i've been out under the car and been prying everything about. There is some movement in the mount number 14 without a doubt. But there is also some play in mount number 3 and the mount it attaches to. The amount of play is of a similar amount in all of the mounts. So I'm not sure if any of them are worn, or if all of them are worn. As the car has done 114k I'll have to assume the later. So I guess I have large bill for mounts heading my way! But I am going to continue with the one at a time approach due to financial restraints (i'm skint after christmas!):D

Heres the image again using a different host.
