Vibration at approx 1750 rpm?

Hi All

My 2000 diesel Freelander has an annoying vibration at around 1750 rpm. It just buzzes as it goes through this. For want of a better description, it feels like the exhaust is vibrating on the body somewhere, although its not. Any ideas on what this could be?

seen a few things that can cause this.........

clutch master cylinder is vibrating on the bulkhead, get someone to grab it while you rev it and see if it stops

power steering pipes resonating, i had one at work doing this and i bent the pipes so they were more "relaxed" in their mountings

check under the bonnet and make sure all hose/pipes/cables etc are clipped in where they should be and are not rubbing/chaffing

The problem you have is sometims not an easy fix and in the past ive spent hours trying to sort problems like this, good luck!
 
Hmm, i cant find anything vibrating on bodywork, yet thats exactly what it feels like. Reminds me of a car I had when the exhaust was touching the bodywork, but its not in this case.

It doesn't vibrate when revving standing still. It only comes through the car when driving. What ever it is its getting worse and you can feel it at lower revs. It comes through the seats, so i assume it's on the drivetrain soemwhere. Do knackered prop bearings typically produce vibration?

Yup, i think some of the vibration was the prop bearings. But the main shake and shudder comes when you put your foot down in 4th and I think 5th gear. It doesn't do it in the first three gears?:confused:

Er might sound daft but check ya tyres are all same make,even worn ,balanced,tracking [front and rear on a gaylander] then go down worn prop mounts, rear mounts [welding on rear sub frame] then go down floppy's split the diff. . ..and er best oh luck. . . .:)
 
Hi All

An update on this is I've now noticed it is there when you rev the car in neutral and you dont have to be driving it for it to happen.:eek: :rolleyes: It is present between 1500-2000 RPMs.
 
stating the obvious - it has to be engine related - yu can discount drivetrain completely, if it isnt connected.

I went under the car at the weekend, I couldn't find anything loose or vibrating anywhere?

Could this be the gearbox or the IRD? There seems to be a mettalic rattle as well as the vibration and it all dissapears as above 2.5k revs and then its smooth?

On the Lseries its in the duct from airfilter to turbo.
Also try disconnecting the egr valve actuator supply - its the 3mm black tube.

Hi Ron

Just disconnected it and it does run a bit better. It has more initial grunt so to speak. I'll have to look at cleaning/replacing that!

Sadly it didn't cure my vibration but I didn't really expect it to as that is a lot more mechanical.

We think we may have found the cause of my vibration. The lower engine mount at the back of the engine has about 10mm play when pulling the engine about by hand. Also the mount by the battery has slight play in it too. New ones will be ordered on tuesday (where's the best place to order these from?) and fitted next weekend and hopefully that will be the end of it. I can then expect many thousands of miles of trouble free motoring!:)
