Just back from hospital visit in Scotland and two hundred miles later it's very difficult to re-start my Landy
Turns over, strong battery,. Occasional stutter but it takes ten mins before it properly fires. All I did north of the border was re-fuel with diesel. Any initial thoughts?

Cheers it's automatic. Stalled it today at a roundabout and took ten minutes of spinning to get it running. Left it all day and went out an hour ago to cold start it and took three of four minutes.

would be good to see if there are any fault codes logged,
untill then(not necessarily in the following order):
1. When you have a chance let it with face downwards on a slope and try to bump start it without cranking it...if it starts easy this way you need a new starter,
2. if you run a bleeding sequence prior of cranking it and then it starts OK replace the air bleed valve(WJN500110) in the rear wheel side fuel filter port and if still no joy the injector copper washers are suspect
3. the crank sensor is suspect as well,

...btw how old is the fuel filter though? might be a good move to put a new branded one before anything else

I'm wondering if there is another problem. As I'm trying to start it now, I can recall the 'bong bong bong' alarm signal going off at the same time the starter is turning over. Is this an immobiliser problem or something similar? I can also remember earlier the 'downhill descent' light on the dash being on as I tried to start it.

Immobiliser = no crank as it cuts the starter feed.... that 3 bongs is the sound of passed self test of the SLABS, a normal behaviour of facelifts after ignition, better concentrate on what was already said

Try not to go down the path of changing everything...except the injector seals, first!
The "usual" route seems to be fuel pump, FPR, etc etc.
Injector seals are the cheapest and easiest thing to do, so run through sierrferries suggestions first.
Is it difficult to start when its cold?
Drain some fuel from the filter to check for water.
Was it ok before you re-fulled, or has it always been like this?

Loose neg earth contacts, dodgy wire connection from crank sensor, underpower battery - sorted! Thank you all for your wonderful expertise. It's what a forum is for right?
